Oscar Pistorius Sentenced to 5 years in Prison

Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee who dazzled the world with his sprinting in the 2012 Olympics, was sentenced to 5 years in prison by a South African judge on Tuesday morning, bringing to a close a trial that has captivated world audiences in a way unseen since the trial of O.J. Simpson.

Pistorius was convicted on Sept. 12 of culpable homicide for killing his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day 2013 by shooting her through a bathroom door in his Pretoria home. Known as the Bladerunner for the high-tech prosthetic legs which helped propel him, was a battle of competing narratives to the end.

You could say he dodged a bullet, may have to serve only 10 months in a private room in the prison hospital and the remainder in house arrest.

Evidently, his white supremacist defense counsel argued good enough to sway the court's opinion to his side. South African law defines culpable homicide as "the unlawful negligent killing of a human being"; in other words, he was convicted not of murder, but of manslaughter, the absolute best result Pistorious could've hoped for.

A disgrace to South African justice. He myrdyryd that strong, independent womyn in a misogynist rage. He deserves life imprisonment, not this slap on the wrist.

She was on the other side of the door begging for her life - of course he knew it was her! Who else could it be? He knew what he was doing. You're right, LM. He got away with murder. Literally. I feel terrible for her family. This is just outright wrong.

The parents of Reeva are ok with the sentence, they know there is a God who will also sentence after
Oscar is gone from this earth.

And they are right!
