What good would an airburst do?He publicly changed Russia's nuclear use doctrine a couple of decades ago. He went on a modernization binge and they now have about a 10:1 advantage in new, low-yield nukes. The idea is to grab territory and before NATO can bring forces to bear against him and push him back out, he detonates a couple of 5-10 KT devices in a location that will harm NATO but leave them with the choice of freezing the conflict in place OR running the risk of total nuclear war. A device of that size used as an airburst would not leave a nuclear wasteland. He strikes me as the kind who would be willing to take that chance to save himself.
I think they already have shown a willingness to push him into a corner and keep supplying Ukraine until his forces are pushed out. I don't think he will accept that. The best solution would be for someone in the Kremlin to take him out but if they don't, I think he is completely capable of using a "small" device to take out a pocket of resistance or even a NATO base that is supplying Ukraine and keeping the war going. Sure you can. Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were occupied by the U.S. within a couple of months of the bombs detonating. Both were airbursts and left very little fallout contamination.You can't occupy territory that you've nuked.
It depends on the yield and the target. The "Little Boy" detonated about 1800 feet above Hiroshima. It was about 15KT. The same size/yield device over a Ukrainian city would end all resistance there and likely freeze the war in place. The War in Ukraine is not going well for Putin. The question is, how desperate will Putin get to stay in power or defeat Ukraine? We know he will brutalize Ukrainian civilians with bombs, tanks, artillery, and missiles. But that won't stop Ukrainians from defending their homeland. So what other options will Putin consider? Nuclear weapons?

I think that is the case already.That reality may be partly responsible for Putin's gambit. If he uses a LY device on a Ukrainian city or even a NATO base that is supplying weapons to Ukraine and NATO does not respond, then NATO ceases to exist.
