The Va Tech shooting happened because the crazy left thought the privacy of someone who had mental health issues was more important than the safety of citizens. Everyone in the school from students to faculty was afraid of the hulking Korean loner. Professors avoided being alone with him but never complained officially. When two female students made a complaint of stalking to the local police they did what every police agency does in a college town. They avoided an arrest record and instead ordered psychiatric counseling which the maniac never attended and nobody cared. Court ordered psychiatric treatment didn't show up on the instant name check because liberals were afraid that the mentally ill would be labeled. If persons who were incorrectly diagnosed or are mentally stable with medication or judged not to be a threat to society surely the caring left would applaud their ability to petition the court to have their Constitutional rights restored just like the left pushes to restore the voting rights for former convicts. When the NRA suggests that citizens can petition the Court to have their 2nd Amendment rights restored the hypocrite left pretends to be outraged. Petitioning the court doesn't equal arming the mentally ill but the crazy angry left is in the business of spin and fake news that undermines the fabric of society. That's all they have.

In 1871, the NRA was founded by William Church, a lawyer, and George Wingate, a former newspaper reporter. Wingate explained his new organization’s purpose as working to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis.”

To that end, the NRA operated mostly as a sporting club and hunting association for its first 100 years. It put a heavy emphasis on gun safety education and training, especially for young people. Church and Wingate had been inspired to create their organization in part from their experience as soldiers during the Civil War, where they had been appalled by the poor marksmanship skills of their fellow fighters. Guns were dangerous, especially in untrained hands, the two men understood. The NRA organized safety clinics and target-shooting competitions to teach young men (and later women) proper gun use and the obligations of responsible firearm ownership.
