No need for Catholics to “breed like rabbits” — Pope Francis

Speaking to journalists on his flight back from the Philippines, the pope said that he once asked a mother of seven children who was pregnant with her eighth if she wanted to “leave behind seven young orphans”.

“She said, ‘I trust in God.’ But God gave us the means to be responsible,” the pope said. “Some think, and excuse the term, that to be good Catholics, they must be like rabbits.”

Overpopulation creates poverty as less finite resources are available to each individual. Islam's so popular because much of its' powerbase is located in enpoverished nations. If you try to outbreed Muslims, you might succeed by at the cost of turning Christianity into another extremist-prone religion only strong because it's all the enpoverished people have.

Let's bring a little context to the Pope's words. The Pope is not voicing approval for birth control. In fact he is upholding the Church's teaching banning contraception. From that point he goes on to say:

-------------------------------------

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE – Pope Francis is firmly upholding church teaching banning contraception, but said Monday that Catholics don't have to breed "like rabbits" and should instead practice "responsible parenting."

Speaking to reporters en route home from the Philippines, Francis said there are plenty of church-approved ways to regulate births. But he said most importantly, no outside institution should impose its views on regulating family size, blasting what he called the "ideological colonization" of the developing world.

African bishops, in particular, have long complained about how progressive,
Western ideas about birth control and gay rights are increasingly being imposed on the developing world by groups, institutions or individual nations, often as a condition for development aid.

"Every people deserves to conserve its identity without being ideologically colonized," Francis said.

Pope Francis says Catholics don t have to breed like rabbits Fox News

-------------------

Note the point I highlighted. It appears Western nations and groups are imposing their culture as a condition for extending aid. Pope Francis is against this. I agree with the Pope on this point. Do you agree or disagree that unless developing nations embrace artificial birth control and gay rights, developmental aid should be withheld?
Of course you agree with the Pope on that point....and every other point including promoting Communism, attacking free speech, and validating religious violence. Is he never wrong?

And now he's attacking a time honored Catholic tradition, big families. How does His Holiness think the Church got to be 1.2 billion strong? If he starts passing out condoms will you even then find a way to agree with him?

Sorry, the "population bomb" Leftist myth has already been debunked. In fact, it's been proven that higher population is beneficial because it creates more contributors to mankind. And far from running out of food, we're now producing more than ever and exporting it around the world and hunger has been declining for decades. Time to abandon debunked old myths.

The contributuions to mankind unfortunately tend to come about during times of war. Nothing gives rise to innovation better than figuring out more efficient ways of killing people. And a greater population makes wars more likely as people fight over fewer resources.

Wrong. Your arguments are wrong and outdated. We have more resources today, not fewer. Our ability to produce food is without precedent. Modern farming techniques are being implemented in 3rd world nations. And the Leftist dwindling oil supply is also being exploded as we're now understanding there are oceans of oil wherever we look and in fact it may not even be a fossil fuel. All the Leftist myths are being debunked. They are always wrong and such unbroken consistency is indeed a marvel.

So far, the Pope and I agree that condoms--and any artificial contraceptives--go against everything the Church teaches about human sexuality and the body. The Church teaches the purpose of sex and rejects the premise that is sex for recreation and no consequences should be promoted.

The Pope was pointing out there are natural means of contraception--including abstinence. In other words, using sex purely as fun and recreation, without thinking of family beforehand is a bit irresponsible. Each sexual act could produce a child. Are we open to that? If not, maybe right then is not the best time to have sex. We need to view sex more as sacred, and less as recreational.

We need to keep in mind what the Pope did NOT say. He did NOT say, "Don't have large families." That's inference on the part of his audience.

My wife and I used to use contraception even though it violated our faith. But then we stopped with "family planning" and switched to "God planning" and wonderful things started to occur. We now have 4 beautiful children and that's all we can have because of medical complications DW had with the last one. But we're never tormented by the question of whether or not a child God wanted born was frustrated by our unwillingness. John Paul II's encyclical on human sexuality changed our lives and we now teach it to our children.

Yes, I think that encyclical changed many lives and brought many blessings.

no, for not enjoying recreational sex with your spouse......

How silly. Treating sex as something sacred does not equate to not enjoying it. In fact, I would argue it intensifies both joy and meaning. It appears we are both (probably unnecessarily) feeling sorry for one another.

The higher the population density, the more restrictions will be placed on our personal freedoms. A world in which I would have to make a reservation to visit a local park, be forced to use public transportation, spending my life in a crowd, never being able to walk down an empty street or grassy meadow is not a place I would want to live.

The "population bomb" myth was exploded decades ago. Your hatred for humanity and unwillingness to share the planet is no reason I can't have as many children as I want; 4 so far.

More people means more restrictions and governmental control. More people fighting for fewer and fewer good jobs. I won't be around to see but if that's your cup of tea, have as many as you want. I really don't care as long as you can support them.
