Net Stalkers

No. Now what are you going to do?

Let's assume it's the only email address you have. That's a safe assumption, since I managed to get it. I will fuck up your bank account, if you are doing online banking. I will run a deep background on you, and get all the inside dope I want, right down to your credit report....that opens up a world of fun times, including identity theft. I can also track you online now, and with your IP, I can locate you IRL...right down to the street addy.

I can fuck with your life, Provocateur, and I am a technotard. (I never will, BTW, any more than I will take up gas station robbery.) It is naive to think that these new laws are not needed except to meet the emotional needs for butthurt housewives.

So how did you manage to get Provacateurs email address..did he give it to you???

No, Miss Pix. He asked (at least I thought he asked) what if I had it, what could I do to injure him, and I responded. The lesson is: never use the email address supported by your ISP for anything. Get a Gmail account or an account at one of the million other web-based free places, and use that instead.

Yep the net really helped with privacy issues.
It does have its uses though. I have a website that if you write in the person's name and state they said they hail from, it will show any arrests.

I use it for potential roommates that want to move in. So far, only one popped up and it was for traffic violation.

Criminal Searches - FREE criminal searches on anyone

These free background sites are handy, but not reliable. I know, because I tested it out on a person I knew had a felony record. In the case of potential roommates and other important screenings, I reccomend spending the $10 - $25 to do a paid search.

At the last board I came from, I spoke of my friend dying. I was quite bummed out about it. So I went there I guess for comfort. Duh. Bad idea. I was accused of lying to "get attention". After about a hundred or so pages of a pile on in my honor, a newbie shows up. Asks if my friends name is ########## and if so, then I was not lying.
I gaped. It was a surprise. One part of me was happy that the pile on would now disperse..the other part of me was aghast at the power of the net and those who know how to use it.

Again..I repeat...do not tell too much online. Ya can't run scared all the time, but what you plaster in public could bite ya in the ass. Which is why I hid my facebook and have nothing to do with it.

OMG, what a terrible way to get such awful news. I am sorry, IMEURU.

I am just that good.

Hmmmm...does that mean that you are secretly STALKING Maddy and tricking her into thinking she is STALKING you?

Stalking is for people with too much time on their hands.

I'm guessing that Mad will have to answer to Pixie though. You shouldn't announce on a moderated board that there is a weakness and/or breakdown in their system.

The problem does not lie with USMB or any web site, Provocateur. If I gain your trust and thusly, your ISP-supported email addy, that's a disclosure you CHOSE to make. Nobody can protect you from yourself.

You dun think people still send those Nigerian "Help me move millions out of the country" letters because they never, ever worked, did ya?

As it happens, I am not anxious about murdering sociopaths ATM, but they are not unheard-of on the net, either. The local serial killer here, Anthony Sowell, had a profile on a dating website and so did at least four others murderers I can think of. All of whom found victims that way.

The troll is a multi-use poster; he aggravates everyone. The stalker-aggravator is dedicated to just one poster, and IMO, these types deserve a bit more attention.

Yanno, boedicca, I get the feeling at times that you believe anyone who does not live off the raw land and in any way depends on his fellow man for anything is a "whiner". Yet clearly, you live in a environment that at least has electricity.

Go figure.

I'm not an anti-technology luddite. I have no idea why you would draw such a conclusion based upon my posting history here.

I just don't think it is everyone else's responsibility to conform their behavior to be exactly the way I would prefer.

No one is suggesting we be granted the power to muffle each other. That would be ludicrious. The standard is a REASONABLE person, not the ubber-sensitive. There will always be some cases in the gray area, but there will also always be some cases that clearly fall outside the pale.
I thought you fell outside the pale:eusa_whistle:

So, if I voluntarily join fubar and attract a murdering sociopath as a stalker, that's on me, boedicca?

any idiot who thinks that also thinks if you wear a short skirt, you deserve to be raped.

no one should stalk anyone else. and yes, there should be a response if someone does. if it rises to the level of criminal stalking, there are laws that cover that.

equating following someone around on a message board to rape ?

Obviously, there are degrees of severity, dilloduck, but yes....you can stay online and cause a rape to happen. You can unleash the hounds of hell on someone....or make them fear you will.

It doesn't require a great deal of skill, just a evil heart.

Yes, it seems Maddie was being hypothetical...

You CAN be stalked without revealing all on the net, Provocateur. Gimmie your ISP-supported email addy, and I'll have a field day with it. Donca ever watch those techy scarey movies?

Worded in such a way, that even Pixie had to ask. Specifically:

since I managed to get it.

I am a technotard. (I never will, BTW

Why did Pixie ask?

I assume she asked because she is a Mod and feared it may be vague, especially since you misread it, or pretended to.

The fun of being someone's obsession does wear thin fast. I know scarcely any woman anywhere on the 'net that has not been harrassed, and I know of one case where the man doing the harrassment ended up in prison.

Some people turn on the pc and lose their fucking minds. It's as if they are on drugs. They cannot seem to grasp that they are interacting with other humans, and that their on-line conduct can have off-line consequences.

IMO, when a woman tells a man she wishes to be left alone (or a man tells a woman, or man to man, and so on) there should be a ginormous pressure on that person to comply. Mebbe not a legal one, but nonetheless, after asking someone to leave you in peace, there should be some relief.

What say you, folks? Should net stalking victims be better protected?

It should not be protected if attempted by government regulations. We lose freedon each time government "rescues" us from our fellow human being. It is up to us to stop it. I have never been harassed and I register under different names on all sites and cannot be traced, in spite of those who might think otherwise... No one on any site has ever been discourteous to me, or "followed" me.

:dunno: You'd have to ask Pixie that...Maybe she wasn't sure and wanted to clarify?

 I find it likely that if people were able to hack emails that easily, that before now, the mods would be aware of the problem. It was just a strange proclamation on the open board.

I haven't received a PM yet with my email, so I'll assume it was a poorly worded hypothetical.

It is indeed hard as hell to hack a social networking site like this and get the members' email addies, Provocateur. That is not how I would try and do it, if I were so inclined. I'd use what is called "social engineering"; make you trust me, and get you to offer it to me of your own free will.

Social engineering is really just a confidence game run on the net. E.g., I pretend to be someone I am not, say a hottie 19 year old girl. I get you to go private -- yahoo IM or whatnot -- and that gets me your email addy. If it is ISP-supported, I am golden. If not, I move on to try someone else.

Sooner or later, this pays off.

Too late, Aqua. The federal legislation on internet crimes is not that bad, but some state stuff is terrible. Vague, contradictory with the laws of other states, etc. Like I say, every time there's a news story about a tragedy connected to the net, some state somewhere enacts yet another of these laws.

That is one of the more idiotic things I've ever heard.

People do not "cause" rape to happen. If that were so, we would convict women who are raped for "causing" someone else to rape them, and there'd be a lot more convictions of Porn big shots.

Internet, or any, sort of harassment takes place when one party tells another party to leave them alone; to stop calling, not to come by, not to send them private messages; and the other person continues to do it. It's pretty simple.

If you have told somebody to leave you alone, but you continue to engage that person in conversation, you're screwed. If someone really bothers you, tell them to leave you alone and report them when they don't. Keep a journal.

Sadly, people often think it's harassment if they don't like another poster. That's not harassment, that's annoyance. It's only harassment if they pursue contact after you have made it clear you don't want that contact.

WTF is this JenT?

Is Huggy cheating on me?

That was Jenny Eliza I was cheating on you with. I wouldn't know this JennyT if she sat on my face!

O, okay. I dun recall Jenny Eliza all that well, but I liked her.

Cheat away.

Good answer. That's the way my gal Rhonda was. She even stocked the house with playmates when she had to go away for any extended periods of time. Nothing in the world like a woman that doesn't have a jealous bone in her body! It's not weakness...it's confidence!

Hold everything----I think we have found our "stalker".

To clarlify, Maddie, I already knew she passed. I went to the board to tell my friends of her passing and I was quite mopey. But some were not friends...and they did a pile on that I was just lying about it to get attention. Until the newbie showed up with all the info. How that person knew, I don't know. Nor care at this point.
I'm pretty much open about everything, but since then, I don't get too yappy with more personal info about myself. It was a good lesson.

You became upset when you felt as if you were attacked by a group of anonymous cyber characters who you thought were your friends ?

You can be an insensitive ass at times, dilloduck. I believe we have gotten your point: you are a teflon man and nothing anyone could say would upset you.

No need to co-opt IMEURU's suffering to make your point further.

You can pay or hire someone to rape a third person. On the net, it's often happened that an ex takes his former gf's photo and personal contact information and posts it on a sleazy site with language suggesting the woman invites any sort of sexual deviancy known to man. It certainly places her in harm's way, and prolly has led to a few rapes.

I agree, if you are exchanging dialogue with a person, it is asinine to complain they are stalking or harrassing you. Step one with an aggravating person should always be disengage.

As for the line between aggravation and harrassment, it is not some big bright line. Mods and cops must use their judgment, and apply the standard of a REASONABLE person.

I do find it hard to be real sensitive to those who are hurt as a result of their own illusions. I don't even give myself a break when I get too carried away with the goings on of a cyber forum. The phenomenon of internet based socializing is still quite absurd to me but I'm trying to grasp all the nuances.
My favorite absurdity remains that fact that typing in all caps is offensive and interpreted as rude yelling. What a hoot.:cuckoo:
