Net Stalkers

Agreed--whoever runs the joint calls the shots. If I don't like it I can move on. People really need to learn that this place isn't real. If the identity you choose to be here gets trashed, you are not trashed.

"Moving on" is fine -- for USMB. What about facebook, or LinkedIn, or some of the other, larger sites?

And this discussion is not about those who call 911 when they chip a nail, dilloduck. Nobody is gonna deny that USMBers go through a whole lot more tissues than seems strictly necessary.

Good Lord. You have no right to Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. If you sign up, you take the risks. If you don't like the result, then close it down.

You want this legislated more than it is now?

No one can "stalk" you without you providing them enough information to do so. The Internet, as of now, is anonymous. You put too much out there, you take a risk.

As to "stalkers" that you think are on a message board, the ignore feature is great. Just leave it turned on. No peaking. It's amazing that when "stalkers" don't get a response they will just leave you alone.

I agree I have no right to be on facebook or LinkedIn or any other website, Provocateur. But I have a right to earn a living, correct? My on-line self is a mirror of me, and those profiles do generate valuable contacts. And I'm a peewee...I know people who live exclusively on what they earn on-line.

Do they all have to bend over and take it if some fuckwhit decides to annoy them?

Dang! I was looking for a getaway driver for Gas Station larceny too.

Have to keep looking. And still no ladies stalking me :(

I knew people on boards that got fired from their jobs because someone got pissed off at them. Others had their businesses contacted by trolls, spreading rumor. One guy was accused of being a pedophile so he had to tell his boss what was being gossiped about due to him being a school bus driver.
That is why one should NEVER tell too much about themselves on the net. Too many wackos.

What other people do is there own business and, for the most part, completely out of your control.

It's only annoying if you let it get to you. Your reactions are under your control...well, maybe not so much in your case. ;)

And one gal had officers show up at her door because someone called and said she was threatening suicide and swallowed a bunch of pills. It was a crank call.

Others posted pics of their family/kids. Others would take those pics and morph them in to child porn and post them at other boards.

Online stalking isn't just words on a screen. But like Radio said...it is up to each individual board owner to set the TOS. That's why google has so many message boards to choose from. You pick the one that tickles your ear.

You CAN be stalked without revealing all on the net, Provocateur. Gimmie your ISP-supported email addy, and I'll have a field day with it. Donca ever watch those techy scarey movies?
No. Now what are you going to do?

Let's assume it's the only email address you have. That's a safe assumption, since I managed to get it. I will fuck up your bank account, if you are doing online banking. I will run a deep background on you, and get all the inside dope I want, right down to your credit report....that opens up a world of fun times, including identity theft. I can also track you online now, and with your IP, I can locate you IRL...right down to the street addy.

I can fuck with your life, Provocateur, and I am a technotard. (I never will, BTW, any more than I will take up gas station robbery.) It is naive to think that these new laws are not needed except to meet the emotional needs for butthurt housewives.

You're saying you have my email? PM it to me then.

I don't feel sorry for people who decide to do something voluntarily.

Everything has a price; and obviously they feel that the benefits they receive outweigh the price they pay, or they wouldn't do it.

I'll save my pity for people who are dying of cancer, involuntarily unemployed, and stuff like that.

So, if I voluntarily join fubar and attract a murdering sociopath as a stalker, that's on me, boedicca?

You didn't start this thread to discuss murdering sociopaths as stalkers. That isn't what the issue is that causes hassles for the mods and admins. What you are doing is trolling for trolls. If you don't want to be annoyed by a troll, put said person on ignore.

It's frightfully easy.

And if you are concerned about a murdering sociopath, the proper course of action is to contact law enforcement agencies that could actually do something about - not advertise your fears in a thread on a public forum.

As it happens, I am not anxious about murdering sociopaths ATM, but they are not unheard-of on the net, either. The local serial killer here, Anthony Sowell, had a profile on a dating website and so did at least four others murderers I can think of. All of whom found victims that way.

The troll is a multi-use poster; he aggravates everyone. The stalker-aggravator is dedicated to just one poster, and IMO, these types deserve a bit more attention.

Yanno, boedicca, I get the feeling at times that you believe anyone who does not live off the raw land and in any way depends on his fellow man for anything is a "whiner". Yet clearly, you live in a environment that at least has electricity.

Go figure.

Yup. That happened too. Google maps with arrows to posters homes. Mortgage reports on other posters. Even past lawsuits and arrest records.

I'm not an anti-technology luddite. I have no idea why you would draw such a conclusion based upon my posting history here.

I just don't think it is everyone else's responsibility to conform their behavior to be exactly the way I would prefer.

Well, the assumption that I had one email (which is actually a bad assumption, as most people have more than one) was wrong.

And no, no PM. :eusa_whistle:

I could use a stalker like that!
