I think that was an issue on which Putin wasn't completely honest. However, in principle it's partly true because the threat to Russia's borders is the equivalent to Russia as is a Nazi threat.

As to the war, the Ukraine is done but Russia will have to contend with ongoing extreme right terrorist pinprick attacks. Putin's only option is to take it out on what's left of the Ukraine's military.

The people in Ukraine may be Slavic descendants. But that doesn’t make them Russian. Anymore than the fact that I descended from Norwegian stock makes me Scandinavian.

In fairness, the ukrainians should have divided the country along this line and lived peacefully, but the reds did not want that.
