Civilians must prepare for all-out war with Russia in the next 20 years, a top Nato military official has warned.

While armed forces are primed for the outbreak of war, private citizens need to be ready for a conflict that would require wholesale change in their lives, Adml Rob Bauer said on Thursday.

Large numbers of civilians will need to be mobilised in case of the outbreak of war and governments should put in place systems to manage the process, Adml Bauer told reporters after a meeting of Nato defence chiefs in Brussels.

“We have to realise it’s not a given that we are in peace. And that’s why we [Nato forces] are preparing for a conflict with Russia.

“But the discussion is much wider. It is also the industrial base and also the people that have to understand they play a role.”

Adml Bauer, a Dutch naval officer who is chairman of Nato’s Military Committee, praised Sweden for asking all of its citizens to brace for war ahead of the country formally joining the alliance.

Stockholm’s move, announced earlier this month, has led to a surge in volunteers for the country’s civil defence organisation and a spike in sales of torches and battery-powered radios.

Biden's war .. his proxy war on the Russian front, and he needs to be concerned with Taiwan and China.

There's no possibility of Russia challenging a Nato country. That would be an escalation far beyond the established rules.

It has to be understood that Russia has no interest in expanding its territory, past what is necessary to establish border security against US led aggression.

This is somewhat of an ignorant and fear mongering piece of writing.

Where bits are true if this and that happened....overall it's not true.

Russia's failure in Ukraine and their constant drain on their human resources tells EVERYONE that they are stretched to the limit of their capabilities.

And as long as THE WHOLE WORLD continues to supply Ukraine with munitions nothing is going to change...

Poland, who is not the best friend of Ukraine is literally itching to step into the fray and destroy Russian troops.

Also Turkey is still holding on to the only major waterway out of the Black Sea. And if Russia gets too big for its britches Turkey is going to close the straight.

Also....
With Russia becoming stalled out in Ukraine all the major powers that be are carefully watching the effectiveness, frequencies, and capabilities of their entire military equipment list. And truthfully its not exactly difficult to put them in a box and close them up within their own borders with ALL of their equipment including aircraft and missiles.

Russia is good at Electronic Warfare...but EW is not a force field of protection. There are many ways around it.

I prefer peace over war.

I prefer peace over war.
So do I. War is a horrible waste of resources...especially human.

People throw $100K Corvettes at 5 million dollar pieces of equipment in hopes that they both will be destroyed. Lots of people die and/or are forever permanently maimed or crippled....nevermind the cases of PTSD that will proliferate society afterwards.

But that doesn't seem to stop invaders from trying to steal resources.

Apparently,Putin has ‘designs’.

Over the next 20 years it seems.

We should always guard our defences. Too many times have we been caught out through complacency. We never learn.

You say that.

I just watched a discussion on this, composed of three expert ‘high ups’, one an important high ranking military man. Unfortunately l can’t link to the live show, not through want of trying.
If Russia tries they would have to pull off a major coup. Like secretly destroying most of Europe or the USA in a sneak attack.

And with the current eyes all over Russia....it's not possible.

You seem to contradict yourself on your opinions of what Russia intends to do. To be clear, Russia's agenda is defending their border against US aggression.

There is a continuous string of evidence to that effect, going back to the fall of the Soviet Union. And in fact, well before that with America's Cold War methods.

But this article is assuming that blind ambition is Russian goals. That would be a mistake. Russia is very fearful of a nuclear exchange. It would decimate them. Destroy any hope of a collective.
Russian Federation is built upon similar thoughts as America the melting pot. Russia has at least 9 different sub groups of people all united under "Russia" and that's not counting all the other ethnic groups that comprise Russia today. Independently in their past the 9 tribes all fought each other until they became united under Peter the Great.
They acquired many nations after WW2 and became the USSR. And they ultimately want them back....but they are not stupid either.
They make phoney claims regularly...and nobody seems to believe them except currently for the American Republican Party.
Not even their own people believe Russian government claims. But for whatever reason the Republicans seem bent on believing the phoney claims.

Russia is a paper tiger. No, we really don't want to tangle with them. And unless they force our hand we won't. We would much rather engage in trade than fight. But we can fight better than they if push comes to shove. We have much superior equipment and munitions. (Ukraine is only getting out of date equipment ready to retire but refurbished for sale...and they will pay for it eventually)

Now what has surprised everyone is the need for howitzer shells. And how many we really need for a war. HIMARS are great....but are subject somewhat to EW. Regular 155mm shells are really important and a huge stockpile of these really are important....into the millions of rounds of varying types and munitions.

"Shoot and scoot" has been very very useful in this war until it comes time for landmines....stacked 3 together. They have been a huge problem. One we haven't really solved. Where likely there is a solution....it probably isn't one we want to share.

Don't you mean Russia has been caught out? last time it cost them 26 million dead, that is why they don't want a rancid violent military alliance on their Western border.

Russia has called America's claims of weapons superiority. We can start with that.

Russia is a paper tiger? In what respect that we haven't heard of by now? There's no superiority of any of the big three, in the event of nuclear war. You don't seem to understand that limits have been mutually agreed upon for rules of engagement. That limits Russia, China, and the US.'

How about a discussion on that? I contend that there can be no winner.

I just might be true that Russia's conventional weapons are superior to America's?

I speculate, I won't be fighting your armchair war with you. It's foolish.
