Breathing rarified air.
I have never read the book myself but from my research on Henrietta Lacks, she was an amazing albeit ignored part of medical history. Without this Black woman we would not have a lot of the cures we currently do for disease. This idiotic mom considers the book pornographic. SMDH.

Tennessee mom calls Henrietta Lacks book 'pornographic,' seeks to have it banned in school

"
Jackie Sims' 10th-grade son was asked to read "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" during the summer. "I consider the book pornographic," she tells WBIR-TV. Her son was given an alternate text to read after her objections.

Now, Sims wants the book removed from Knox County Schools entirely.

"I just feel that strongly about it being out of the hands of our children," she says. There are about 59,000 students in the school system, which includes about 90 schools."

One dingleberry is not that frightening. Does she have anyone else in her camp?---that would just be sad.

She complained and the school gave her child a different book to read. Now she calls everyone's kid "our" kids and wants to impose her parenting opinions on everyone. She want parental rights and when she gets them she decides to take them away from other parents.

She'll probably have more if this gets some extended press.

"Jackie Sims, mother to a 15-year-old sophomore at L&N STEM Academy in Knoxville, told the local news station WBIR she was “shocked that there was so much graphic information in the book.” She cited one passage describing Lacks’ husband’s infidelity and another concerning Lacks’ discovery of a tumor on her cervix."

Wow, disgusting.

the movie is already in production.

anyone know any black porn actresses to play the lead?

(The book is about her cancer cells being used in research)

"The cancer cells harvested without consent from Henrietta Lacks, a tobacco farmer who lay dying in the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951, led to one of the most imporant medical breakthroughs in modern medicine"

I've heard of the book. I haven't read it. I know of Henrietta Lacks because there was a big shpeil after this book was published.......screw it. I'm going to buy the book. I'm going to read the book. Then I am going to force or bribe my kid to read it and write a review.

Yeah it just went to the top of my list of books to read.

I never heard of her before this. It sounds appropriate for 10th grade though. The woman is a loon.

By 10th grade students should already be introduced to classical pornography. It should be part of any literature class.

There was a case in Tuscaloosa about 20 years ago where a family went ballistic because 'Of Mice & Men' was on an alternate reading list for a local high school. Their complain? The word "goddamn" appeared 52 times. If you read Of Mice & Men, and all you get is the repeating of a single profanity, your reading comprehension is sadly lacking.

I'm sure they were more concerned with the fact that Steinback was a communist and an atheist with a hot contempt for religious people. I could have done very well without having "The grapes of wrath" shoved down my throat. Not everyone hates religion like you demonic Leftists and I'm sick of hearing you hypocrites bitch about having somebody's morality imposed when you do the same 'goddamned' thing.

And did you pay attention to what I said? It was on an ALTERNATE reading list. It wasn't shoved down anyone's throat.

And if you would like to point out where I have shown myself to "hate" religion, I would love to see it.

I would've thought you and Steinbeck would see eye to eye you being a NA uncle tom and all.

2 quotes from East of Eden

"First there were Indians, an inferior breed without energy, inventiveness, or culture, a people that lived on grubs and grasshoppers and shellfish, too lazy to hunt or fish. Even their warfare was a weary pantomime."
-John Steinbeck

"By this time the Indian...tribes were forced into revolt, driven and decimated, and the sad, sullen remnants settled on starvation lands. It was not nice work but, given the pattern of the country's development, it had to be done."
-John Steinbeck

Really?! It is a wonderful book. This mom sounds like an overly dramatic fishwife with nothing better to do.

Pffft.

Harlan Ellison loudly professes to be a progressive, an atheist, and a Jew, in that order.

I am none of those, but he is one of my most favorite writers of all time.

I never permit politics to interfere with my appreciation of art.

I even watch Sean Penn movies. :ack-1:

The book arrived on Monday and I handed it to my son and said you read it first. He is somewhere in the third chapter. He is reading it when he finishes up class work and has some time left over. He won't let me read it until he's done. Something about.....it will be forgotten to be put back in his bag and then he won't be able to finish it. I have no idea what he is talking about. :eusa_whistle:

He did say it is interesting. The teacher in one of the classes that he brought it out in had never heard of it.
