Some of you may have noticed my new sig line, "Mighty Christmas." I'd like to share with you the reason I chose this; I thought it was interesting.

I was reading a book of the histories behind some of the Christmas carols. I came upon "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." The book claimed this song was one of the most misunderstood carols because of its archaic language. This is how the first verse would read in modern English:

God keep you strong, gentlemen
Don't let anything upset you!
Remember Christ our Saviour was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were sinners.

A message of comfort and joy!

The word "merry" originally meant "strong," "great," or "mighty." So Robin Hood's Merry Men were Mighty Men; a merry king was a great king, etc.

So when we wish each other Merry Christmas, we are actually proclaiming the mighty miracle of Christ's birth!

Mighty Christmas to you!
