Michelle Claims Fat Kids Are A National Security Threat

Well, here is how it is at my PUBLIC SCHOOL.

They have PE twice a week, they go outside every day (unless it's raining/sleeting, etc) every day for 30 minutes.

We have 2 gym teachers, they teach the kids how to exercise and eat healthy, and have boards around about making healthy eating choices.

What they do, or their parents do, at home is up to them.

But at least we are making an effort at our school.

Great for you all. And I'm sure a local decison? And that's after all where it belongs.

Has anyone ever seen 'Supersize Me'? I was watching it Sat. night. I only got half way through before I fell asleep (it was on at midnight I think) but man, eating McD's 3x/day for a month? Oh, the sheer grossness of it all.

Friend of mine used to go out in Friday and see how many Big Macs he could stuff in his belly in one sitting.

He got up to 8.

He got really phfffffffffffffffat.

Well, then indeed, we need a Big Mac Czar.

Seriously, There's a MacDonalds near my house... every morning the drive up is lined with mini-vans fiull of kids on their way to school. I guess I was lucky, Mom always fixed breakfast.

:eusa_drool:

That would be a Big Mac McCzar.

Yes, a district decision.

But, in my daughter's district they have the same thing. She has gym this semester, and she's in 10th grade. It's required at her High School. I'm glad.

That's all you can do.

But we need to allow kids to play outside. We can't keep them cooped up in the house and we need to do something about all of the junk that passes for food in the grocery stores.

Schools in NJ are waiving the Phys Ed requirement for certain groups of kids. Too many not graduating because they are too lazy to put on a pair of sneakers. Sad but true. Graduation rates are the end all.

Whatever happened to the 'President's Council On Physical Fitness' we had when I was in school and you strived to be recognized through that competition? When I was in 6th grade? The last week of school for us was surrounded by these competitions.

I won a few myself. Does it even exist any longer?:eusa_think:

Yep. The kids need to expend some energy...get out...compete physically...

I hope she enjoys it. Getting out, competing...physically is a great diversion for those kids. I am glad for her. I hope you encourage it.

Look guys, we all know what the nanny-staters are really up to, it is no secret.

And that's really the sub-text here. No one trusts this administration not to come out with a host of new taxes and regulations on yet another industry, using "the children" as an excuse.
Kids are obese today. It is a huge problem (so to speak). The answer is to create a culture where people do more than sit around over an X-box and chow down on double-cheese pizzas and the Colonel. But it isn't the gov'ts job to do that through regulation and legislation.

I was always an athlete, and my daughter too. She and I ride bikes together, go to the park and hike, play frisbee, basketball, swim.......

We eat healthy too.

Now, if I could only get the REST of America to do this, we all wouldn't be having this conversation! :D

Yes it does, we still do it at our school.

But that's run by the government, isn't it?

Seriously, has anyone seen the numbers of people who would be unfit to serve in the military?

Most Philadelphians Unfit for Duty: Report | NBC Philadelphia

A nonprofit group says that up to 90 percent of young Philadelphians are ineligible for military service because of criminal records, obesity or lack of education.

Pennsylvania-based Mission: Readiness released its report Monday. It says 1 million Pennsylvanians are ineligible for the same reasons.

Mission: Readiness is made up of more than 150 retired generals and admirals. The group wants state and federal funding for pre-kindergarten programs that it says give children a solid foundation for academic and personal success.

Evil socialist generals!

I noticed that kids sometimes stay in decent shape till they leave high school then they go downhill fast. But these days they're already fat.

Kids were so skinny when I was growing up....and my hair would bleach out from the sun because I was never inside. I hated being inside.

After sitting around the house for hours on end in the summer kids get fat. Many parents won't allow them out on their own. School buses have to drop kids off mere feet from their doorstep. It's all just a side-effect of the Nanny State this country has immersed itself in.

I've felt for quite some time that all of this coddling that goes on is only going to make kids unable to cope with life but military

She is quoting what military leaders said. Now, you're holding Mrs. Obama accountable for making sure every child in America exercises and eats right, and not thier PARENTS, or themselves?

To me she's saying if things don't change, a lot of these unhealthy, overweight children wouldn't qualify for the military when they are old enough to join.

Teaching kids, and their parents, how to make healthy choices in eating and exercise seems like a great idea to me.
which military leader is she quoting?

Michelle is losing her mind.

Now she's saying that because only 1 in 4 kids in the US can qualify for the military this has become a threat to National Security.

“Military leaders … tell us that when more than one in four young people are unqualified for military service because of their weight,” the first lady says in the prepared remarks, “childhood obesity isn’t just a public health threat, it’s not just an economic threat, it’s a national security threat as well."

Now I've heard everything.

Call it one of those unintended consequences of the Nanny State.

Kids aren't allowed to run around and play like they did when I was growing up so now we've got kids that are getting by on Monster drinks just to keep from being bored to death.

After sitting around the house for hours on end in the summer kids get fat. Many parents won't allow them out on their own. School buses have to drop kids off mere feet from their doorstep. It's all just a side-effect of the Nanny State this country has immersed itself in.

I've felt for quite some time that all of this coddling that goes on is only going to make kids unable to cope with life but military life is out of the question folks. Our pampered kids won't be able to handle the culture-shock they will experience. It doesn't matter if they're out of shape or not.

This is a power and control grab. She knows nothing can be done by the government that will make kids lose weight. Just another way to spend a few billion dollars....:cuckoo:

Demonizing fat kids aint the way to get them healthy. Ever see how they are treated in pee wee games? Do people make fun of fat ladies at the gym? Who would want to go out and play when no one likes them? Yes we've got a problem. But calling chubbies a national security risk doesn't seem to be such a "compassionate" tactic. I've said this many times on this board. No one gets bullied more than overweight kids. So how about adding more fuel to the fire, eh? Errrr!
