27"You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY'; 28but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29"If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell...
- Matthew 5

Is thinking of this sin the only though-crime, or are other things we may imagine sins as well? If so, then isn't railing against homosexuality conjuring the mental image of those sinful acts in your head and thus commiting the sin itself, or at elast the sin or fornication (as with viewing something sinful?)

Can't write, talk, or reference something without conjuring it in your mind. But if sins are committed thinking of them as with adultery, then everytime someone condemns homosexuality they're imagining it in their heads and guilty of the relevant sins.

First, Delta, you can plainly see that Jesus didn't do away with the law, to "lower the standard" but to "raise it to a new level"! One that is fulfilled in the life of the believer. How can one live this life apart from Christ? They cannot. This is why we must be born again. Abraham was justified by faith. Not his works. Abraham believed God. Amen?

Jesus is speaking of the sin of lust - sexual lust of someone who is not your wife or husband. To be clear the marriage bed is to undefiled. Marriage is the only place God approves the union of two persons - as the two become one in marriage which is a type of the mystery of Christ and His Bride - the Church which is not a man made organization but the body of Christ throughout the earth which is one in the unity of the Spirit.

To be clear no fornicator will enter the kingdom of heaven.

In your own strength you could not live this life - the law itself proves the people could not live this life and keep the law perfectly - it was evidence they needed a redeemer - Jesus is Yeshua Hamachiah - the Messiah who became flesh and dwelt among men - not to condemn us but to save us. It is true that before the law said, Thou shalt not commit adultery - now Jesus says, if you thought about it and allowed it to become lust in your heart then you have done it. Wow. That takes sin to the absolute inception of where it begins! The heart of man!

You see, it is the heart of man that is wicked. Proverbs tells us that our own hearts deceive us so we know that this is true. Which is why a person must believe in their hearts and confess with their mouths that Jesus Christ is Lord. Romans 10:9,10 - Plan of Salvation.

There is nothing wrong with our minds, it is the heart that needs to be renewed and it is at the time of our being born again that God takes out that heart of stone and gives us a heart of flesh - a heart that is circumcised which is what God is looking for - to see Christ in us - that our hearts are fully surrendered to the Lord Jesus Christ.

In stating it would be better for you to pluck your eye out then to end up in hell - your entire body in hell - for sin - is to establish the reality of three things. 1. If you sin by allowing your heart to lust after a woman you've committed adultery. 2. If you do not repent and turn from that sin you'll be in hell when you die. 3. Ye must be born again. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No man can come to the Father except through Jesus Christ.

This is a teaching about adultery and I have never applied the scripture to the sin of homosexuality although to burn with lust is to burn with lust. Do others burn with lust? Of course. Still that specific sin is covered in Romans 1 and in other books of the bible. Back to Matthew 5: 27 - 29 This is the teaching in the beatitudes and it begins with those who are blessed in Matthew 5: 1 - 12

Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of God.

Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake: for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely for my name sake.

Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Are you persecuted for righteousness sake, Delta? It is a question all should consider because if you are walking with Jesus that should be one of the evidences of that walk and that unity with Him. The world hated Jesus and he said they are going to hate you also if you are His.

About your post - You are attempting to not only categorize sin but make excuses for it or deny it to be sin. The truth is the truth. The bible states, Let God be true and every man a liar..... the Word of God is true. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. He clearly condemned adultery in the old testament and we see He remains the same on what He considers sin - which is lusting in the heart - one can speak of bible scripture concerning sin and not be tempted to lust over the use of such words - to claim otherwise is ridiculous! Back to the message - Because the Messiah had come - He addresses sin at its core beginning - the heart.

It is the heart that must be cleansed of all sin. It is the repentance that is from the heart that is received by God. A broken and contrite heart God will not despise. Amen?

Not a repentance that is from the top of our heads. If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves. A good thing to do is to ask the LORD to reveal your heart to you and ask Him if there is any place that has sinned against Him and repent of it. Keep a short account with the LORD. But first, call upon the name of the LORD to be saved by repenting of your sins and receiving your salvation through Jesus Christ who alone can redeem you.

As for categorizing of sin. You see that the Jesus fulfills the law in Matthew 5: 17, 18, 19. The penalty is the same for adultery, murder, retaliation, liars, sorcerers, divination ( those in the occult - witches, wizards, divination, persons using drugs, astral projection, spirit communication, etc ) cowards, homosexuals, all drunkards......the list is extensive. Sin is sin. There is no mortal and venial sin -this is a catholic teaching not based on scripture. What did Jesus say concerning the law and sin, Delta?

It is written:
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, THOU SHALT NOT KILL; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment;: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Think on this for a moment. Getting into a rage and saying to a person, You fool! is a sin worthy of being sent to hell for. This is the truth. So what the Christian who fears the LORD does - is to speak truth to the person to wake them up but the decision remains with the hearer of truth.

It is not to the Christian or to any person to stand in judgment and declare, Thou fool! Which is why I cringe when I see some people screaming Fool! At one another. It is something Jesus warned us not to do. You could say to a person - this or that would be a foolish thing to do or do not be foolish but to attack someone declaring them a fool is a serious offense - the same as it would be to hate any human being in your heart.

The bible states that the person who hates their brother in their heart is a murderer. Do you realize that is an old testament teaching and not a new testament teaching? Yes. It is. You see again that Jesus came to fulfill the law. Jesus tells us to love our enemies. Pray for those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse. Amen? Ye must be born again, Jesus said.

By believing on Jesus Christ, that he died on the cross and shed his blood for your sins and that he rose on the 3rd day and that he did ascend into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father - to be born again and have your name written in the lambs book of Life - to have your name written in heaven - is a miraculous event, Delta.

In that born again experience the LORD makes all things new. You have a new heart, with new desires - you may backslide - you may return to the world - it is possible to backslide - but the Spirit of God will continue to call you and call you to return back unto Jesus Christ and if you do not then that is where a soul loses their salvation - as Whitney Houston lost hers. She was saved - she did know the LORD as a young child - she was taught once saved always saved which was not true - she lived however she wanted to live -continued on in drugs and drink and at an unexpected moment while intoxicated with those substances she drown in a hotel bathtub and Satan took her to hell.

This is why we must take the Gospel seriously. This is why the laborers go out to win the lost souls and warn them of hell not just for one sin but for all sin - there is no large or small sin with God - sin is sin and we know that those who commit the sins listed in Revelation 21:8 shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. It it imperative that we realize heaven is for real and hell is for real. Our own eternal lives depend upon it.

Thanks for reading. I'm continuing the typing out of Gospel of John so this will be my only response to your thread - it was a good question you asked - I thought. Although you did not state the meaning of Matthew 5: 27 correctly in that you added to it. Let us consider what James says in order to identify where you went off, Delta.

This is the scripture lesson that reveals what Jesus meant in Matt.5:27

It is written:

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. When tempted, no one should say, God is tempting me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin when it is full grown, gives birth to death.
-James 1: 12:15

What death is James speaking of? Spiritual death. Eternal separation from God.. When a person knows they are sinning in their heart they should not continue in it but immediately repent to the LORD and return back to God. That is the proper response to the temptation to sin - no matter what sin it is.
