He tells me when the gun buy-back AKA confiscation was enacted many people in the cities who had an old gun laying around they had inherited got rid of it by selling it to the government.

A gun is the weapon of choice for a target more than 20 feet out. A knife, machete or bayonet is the weapon of choice for any target within 20 feet. A knife does more damage in the hands of women trained to use them than a well aimed bullet does, and the knife has a better chance of hitting vital organs and major veins near the skin.
