I'm surprised it made the news at all. To hear gun proponents commentary; this sort of thing happens all the time.

See the thing is in a place like Utah, where everyone knows lots of people carry. Just that mere fact prevents many crimes. Criminals for instance have to think a bit harder about knocking over the local 7/11 when it is highly likely there is an armed person inside.

No one ever said it was possible to stop ALL crime. Studies show that concealed-carry laws reduce crime rates overall, and rates of "hot" crimes (where the criminal actually confronts his victim) in particular.

I'm always curious about the "concealed" business though. Wouldn't you want the guy with the knife to see that you're packing heat instead of having to whip out your heater and smoke the bastard (heard that in a movie).

Studies have shown that open-carry protects only the person who is carrying. Concealed-carry protects the community at large, because the criminals can never be sure ahead of time who's dangerous and who isn't.

Contrary to those of you on the Left, I'm not scared of American citizens with guns. Guns deter more criminals than they abet, as evidenced by this topic. I'll use Kennesaw, Ga. as an example. They passed a law that said EVERY household MUST have a gun. Liberals went NUTZ, claiming that the town was going to wind up a shooting gallery.

You know what happened? Yep, violent crime dropped by over 50%. It seems that criminals look for targets of opportunity that are least likely to be able to fight back.

And if your definition of ignorant is knowing more than your opponent, I'll happily remain ignorant and continue to wipe the floor with your 'educated' ass.

Only those licensed by both a state authority and authorized by the local jurisdiction(s) where the gun is to be carried, and the person completes the firearms training equal to that required for peace officers (on the range and in the classroom), as well as passing the psychological evaluations and background investigation required of all peace officers (in CA) and signing off on the use of force policy for peace officers in each jurisdiction where the weapon will be carried. All of which to be paid for by the candidate.

The person then must qualify on the range every quarter and pass written tests on the use of force policy in each jurisdiction, which would also be fee based. Finally, the person will lose the privilege forever if convicted of a crime of violence, detained or arrested for being under the influence of a alcohol or other drugs, brandishing a weapon in violation of the use of force policy or convicted of any crime of moral turpitude.

SALT LAKE CITY - A man with a gun is being credited with stopping another man who allegedly began stabbing people at a grocery store in Utah Thursday.

ABC4.com said the suspect bought a knife inside the Smith’s store, stood in the foyer, and began stabbing people.

Two people were seriously injured, including one person who was stabbed in the stomach and another who was stabbed in the head and arms, according to the article.
