Majority of Americans favor wealth tax on very rich: Reuters/Ipsos poll

and it will be a tough slog to convince people that THEY are responsible for their own lives, and NOT the governments....

before 1998 we had a Republican Party that did that, and the result was a budget surplus.....

Since 1998, the post 1998 Republican Party has been as bad or worse than the Democrats on that issue....

Maybe because the democrats constantly bitch about deficits only when it suits them? Then, they are more than willing to spend hog wild on their own causes while anyone else's causes will be the end of America as we know it (sarcasm).

So, how would you balance the budget, oh magical and so much more intelligent than everyone else Mr. or Ms. Mathematical budget busting wizard?

If stopping the bleeding were the actual goal here shouldn't we be addressing the real monster? Unfunded Entitlements?

Trump gave post 1998 Republican Speaker Paul Ryan the chance to repeal ObamaCare....

What did post 1998 Republican Ryan do?

NOTHING

Unfunded mandates are a huge problem. The pre 1998 GOP kept that under control, mostly.... until W.....

Inquiry Confirms Top Medicare Official Threatened Actuary Over Cost of Drug Benefits

"An internal investigation by the Department of Health and Human Services confirms that the top Medicare official threatened to fire the program's chief actuary if he told Congress that drug benefits would probably cost much more than the White House acknowledged.

A report on the investigation, issued Tuesday, says the administrator of Medicare, Thomas A. Scully, issued the threat to Richard S. Foster while lawmakers were considering huge changes in the program last year. As a result, Mr. Foster's cost estimate did not become known until after the legislation was enacted"

the pre 1998 GOP would've impeached a President for this.

The post 1998 GOP didn't care, because it doesn't care about America, it cares only about Israel.

Oh come on. Let's not jump on the crazy train now. Those republicans also live here in America and not in Israel. While I agree, maybe we spend too much on them, you are being completely hyperbolic with your statements.

how would you balance the budget,

CUT SPENDING

see post #33

I've already answered that

The greatness of the 1990s was that both spending and taxes were cut cut cut... and America prospered because of it.

SPENDING is the problem.

No, no....Israel has nothing to do with our domestic problems, so let's leave them out of this...I asked if and how you would address unfunded mandates, and you essentially gave me a history lesson about unfunded mandates, with a shot at Israel thrown in at the end....Want to try again?

How? Where? How much? All of it? Why don't you come up with your primo budget and present it to Congress . . .

So, how do we convince the people who are now hooked on voting themselves freebies

The typical "Karl Rove voter" is just as eager to get a handout as the Democrat voter who refuses to work.

How do we convince people who never think, never question, and don't have any intelligence????

I don't know....

Chrisi is a typical "Karl Rove voter" with an IQ under 10

Don't we already have tax brackets where the rich DO pay more already anyways?

Yes the rich not only pay a fair share, they pay the lions share of taxes. The top 10% pay 80% of the taxes how is that fair?? Yet Dems and the liberal media continue to spew this LIE that the rich are not paying their fair share.

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The idea of imposing a wealth tax on the richest Americans has elicited sharply divergent views across a spectrum of politicians, with President Donald Trump branding it socialist and progressive Democratic presidential contenders Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders prominently endorsing it.

Among the 4,441 respondents to the poll, 64% strongly or somewhat agreed that “the very rich should contribute an extra share of their total wealth each year to support public programs” - the essence of a wealth tax. Results were similar across gender, race and household income. While support among Democrats was stronger, at 77%, a majority of Republicans, 53%, also agreed with the idea.

If this is true, then the experiment called the United States of America as we know it is done....

The United States as we know it is done, because of the will of the majority of the United States?

Interesting concept.

I think we need a "climate change" type effort...Look, progs have convinced lots of people in the agenda paid for science of climate change, so we need to do that with our budget concerns.

I think we need a "climate change"

Co2 does not cause Earth climate change.....

Increasing Co2 did not warm the atmosphere at all according to the two and only two measures we have of atmospheric temps.....

Can't argue with that....So, how do we convince the people who are now hooked on voting themselves freebies, that they need to brush out these theives?

Every last apex country and empire in the thousands of years of human history as crumbled due to unsustainable spending.

Well, that's right....America was never a pure democracy....And when you have a 50+1% that can vote to steal from the other 49.99% then yes, that's a problem.

What is un-American is holding out on debts.
The 'majority of people' think that citizens should contribute to society in proportion to how much they benefit from it.
For instance, how much tax would you put on the difference in value between rich sons who stay home and poor sons that go die to defend rich sons?
Of course, that is merely one example.

If we could get ourselves out of Afghanistan and Iraq, we would probably save a boatload of money. However, you have to take into account the instability in that part of the world. Again, it's a tricky balancing act.

We could wash our hands of that part of the world if we really wanted to, but at what cost? And how long would it be until we were kind of "forced" back into it because of world instability? Is it more cost efficient to stay and monitor things and be right there just in case? Who really knows unless you could see into the future?

Now you are stereotyping to make it sound as if EVERY rich person gets to stay home, while EVERY poor person has to fight our wars.
