Liberals Scream"Spend More on Infrastructure..."

Whenever you hear "cut spending to the bone" from the GOP...just know there are consequences.
As are there when democrats propose an increase in taxes. Touche....
Tell me. When a tax cut is proposed, you lefties wring your hands wonder how the tax decrease is to be "paid for"...Yet you never have a care in the world about how a tax INCREASE is to be paid for.....if you don't see the irony/double standard in that, you then are a card carrying delusional lying to one's self lefty.

In the wake of the Amtrak tragedy Democrats have been holding it up as an example of broken infrastructure and say we need to raise more taxes to invest into infrastructure like China does. Well perhaps if China did not have all of our manufacturing jobs we would have a local tax base that could pay for infrastructure and education. Only 14 Dem's bolted on Pacific trade bill that will lose more American jobs. Brilliant...just fucking brilliant.

Liberals scream: "SPEND MORE!" > . <

And you scream: Cut, slash and burn! Of course, that will make us a third world country! And of course you will blame the democrats for it.

Now chew on that moron!
Shut up....
You come on here and scream about infrastructure yet you offer ZERO in specifics. Nothing....

And assholes like you scream that it is all a boondoggle and we shouldn't invest in our own country. Even bridges that are highly needed or more money to upgrade them to be able to handle a future earth quake = boondoggle! You spent how much on infrastructure in Iraq? SO you have no effin room to whine!

We spend about 2-3% of the federal budget on infrastructure. If we wish to have the best,,,well, we better be ready to pay for it. Of course, you don't want us to be the best! Your plan is Slash, cut and burn!!!

I thought Obamas stimulus plan was suppossed to be a job creating shovel ready infrastructure plan. Guess they needed to plan that a little better.
Most of the money was spent on saving public sector jobs, particularly those held by members of public employee unions. Jobs that are for the most part now gone.

Any sane first world nation would spend and invest in its infrastructure, science, and educational programs. Any nation that doesn't is a fucking basket case.

Why shouldn't we maintain our own country??? Any self respecting people would! We're not *******.

Obama has spent about 159 billion dollars on failed renewable energy projects (Solyndra, Abound Solar, Fiskar, etc).

$159 billion? Got a link for that?

That program was actually profitable for the US government:U.S. Expects 5 Billion From Program That Funded Solyndra - Bloomberg Business

The U.S. government expects to earn $5 billion to $6 billion from the renewable-energy loan program that funded flops including Solyndra LLC, supporting President Barack Obama’s decision to back low-carbon technologies.
On a loss of $500 billion...And the virtual zero tax rate paid by GE because that company promised Obama it would buy into the Chose One's green initiative bullshit? How much is THAT costing American taxpayers?

About a trillion in stimulus bucks to fix our infrastructure crisis and this is what we got?

We need a Congressional investigation to see who actually got the money!

~100 billion more for about a year. And as of today we're spending at the lowest level in over 2 decades. So extremely short lived.. And yes, we do need a investigation into this as most of it didn't go into infrastructure, science, r&d, etc. A little secret,,,Wall street, banks, nation building in Iraq and welfare!
Who is "we"?

Whenever you hear "cut spending to the bone" from the GOP...just know there are consequences.
What would be the consequences to cutting ........ the care and support of illegal immigrants, building mosques on foreign soil, supplying weapons to drug lords and terrorists, most of the foreign aid given to foreign governments, exploring the far reaches of the universe, stupid projects such as the fence along our southern border, no-bid government contracts, unnecessary military spending, subsidies to rich farmers and big oil, bribes paid to North Korea and Iran, unnecessary government travel, the ridiculous perks and benefits given to members of Congress, lavish White House vacations, studying the sex habits of cockroaches, looking for water on the surface of Mars, and giving tax refunds to dead people?

Nothing wrong with r&d and exploration. Both make real jobs and add to the strength of our nation..The rest you may have a point.
Real jobs? Are you fucking kidding?
These are taxpayer funded useless shit jobs. Nobody cares about what Americans think about their cars. Yes, the federal government funds a program to gather information on the feelings of Americans regarding a recent vehicle purchase.

Well Sonny...

I see you're back to your gloom and doom mindset. I'll take the first and last.

When I worked in public health, we had a refugee program that provided medications to refugees that were anti-parasite, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial. The thought was that if you are going to have these people in the community since we didn't build that "stupid fence", it was better to have them without tapeworms. Not sure how many lives we saved but I would put it in the hundreds.

And the tax refunds to dead people. When you hear about the GOP talking about "cutting spending to the bone", usually this means the guy who does such things as removing the dead from tax rolls is furloughed to avoid paying her/him a salary.
Well. That furlough is a good thing. Why should the taxpayers continue funding a salary for a job that is no longer needed?

Whenever you hear "cut spending to the bone" from the GOP...just know there are consequences.

We subsidize amtrack to the tune of 1.5 billion+ a year to run routes that can't pay for themselves, why? Shouldn't they close unprofitable routes?
Keep them going. But charge the users an appropriate fare that matches the per mile cost to get them from A to B and back...

China does not have all our manufacturing jobs. We are making more stuff than ever before.

Technology obsoleted our manufacturing jobs, not China.

Besides, manufacturing is the trough of the smiley curve of production value addition. Design and distribution are where its at.

That's why the US is being tough about protecting intellectual property rights in the negotiations.

There simply is no money in making T-shirts and lava lamps.

Absolutely false. The US used to export more than imported, now it's the other way around. You're importing far more than you're exporting leading to a trade imbalance. China is the country with the trade $$$ these days.

Holding the IT means that US corporations make money off the goods China makes, but American workers do not. Manufacturing the source of a country's wealth and you've sold to China for cheap goods.

Dumb move.
Ahh...You are incorrect. The reduction in the numbers of workers required to operate factories has been reduced because of new technologies that when used reduce the number of people required to do the work.
The Japanese have been doing this for 4 decades. Productivity has increased dramatically. Where's the problem?

The US should be subsidizing rail transportation, public radio and television, and closing embassies is just the worst idea of all of them.

You'd be further ahead to close overseas military bases than embassies. It would save more money. You want to cut the peacemakers and say nothing about the warriors. Dumb, dumb and dumber.
We already do subsidize all of the above.
And FYI. peace may be achieved by the pen. But it is maintained by the sword.
In this country public electronic media is no longer public. It is bought and paid for with corporate grants and liberal activist groups.
Public TV and radio should be de-funded.

Matthew,

You know you are arguing with people who see nothing wrong with ending benefits and the security nightmare it would cause. It also severely weakens the country's intellectual pool for innovation.
But they see nothing wrong with spending $1.5 trillion on a few planes. These guys think that the US enemy can be defeated with planes.

Thats where the nuts comes from... And they then roll out the usual NIH research grants given every year which is taken out of context...

They lack lateral thinking... They don't seem to grasp the the US military is social program...

Well, if one can find the money for R&D, and exploration, one can find the money for infrastructure, don't you think?
We could tax the 47%, and give those on welfare one month to get a fuckin' job or starve.

That would free up several trillion to fix the infrastructure, and create millions of jobs the leeches could take.
Where would they get a job? And, would those jobs pay enough to get them off welfare? Do all of them have the education and training necessary? Are all of them able to work? Are children on welfare old enough to work? What about the aged and elderly? The disabled? What about the mentally challenged?

So, let everyone unemployed starve, including those mentioned above? Let our children starve? Our elderly? Our handicapped? Where would you send them to starve? Who would pay to bury all of them? Where would we bury them? There are 45.7 million presently on food stamps.
Ah the old liberal standby of "but what about"..
Yeah. Guess what.....TO answer to all of your queries.....There are low or no cost job training programs available everywhere.
And why the hell should we have to worry as to whether or not a job pay enough to exceed the welfare payments?.....How about this. Since the federal government is guilty of making poverty comfortable, the solution is to reduce the payments as an incentive to the recipient to find a job.

I'm NOT a Liberal, but I do believe that we need to spend on infrastructure. We could pay for it by cutting waste and unnecessary spending.

What would about 2.5 million buy?

1. The National Institute of Health’s Center for Alternative and Complimentary Medicine spent $387,000 to study the effects of Swedish massages on rabbits.

2. The Department of Interior spent $10,000 to monitor the growth rate of saltmarsh grass. In other words, the government is paying people to watch grass grow. On the bright side, they have not started paying people to watch paint dry.

3. The National Science Foundation has granted more than $200,000 to a research project that is trying to determine how and why Wikipedia is sexist. Wikipedia’s War on Woman?

4. The National Institute of Health funded a study to see if mothers love dogs as much as they love kids. Regardless of the results, this experiment cost taxpayers $371,026.

5. The federal government has granted $804,254 for the development of a smartphone game called “Kiddio: Food Fight.” The game is intended to teach parents how to convince their children to try and eat new healthier food choices.

6. The National Endowment for the Humanities has provided $47,000 for undergraduate classes that teach students about laughing and humor.

7. The National Science Foundation spent $856,000 to teach mountain lions how to walk on treadmills as part of a research project whose aim was to better understand mountain lions’ instincts.

Top 7 Wackiest Examples of Wasteful Government Spending from Wastebook 2014

You ignorant twit. The wackiest example of wasteful Government spending is on Iraq. 2.5 million is just a damn drop in the bucket, compared to trillions wasted in/on Iraq.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2015, its budget is $7.3 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions. Each year, NSF receives about 48,000 competitive proposals for funding, and makes about 11,000 new funding awards. NSF also awards about $626 million in professional and service contracts yearly.

And here's the article for NSF and their research on mountain lions. It's hardly just a walk on treadmills.

The NSF is one of the biggest federal slush funds in existence. It should be made to disappear.
Who gives a shit about the fuckin mountain lions.
They eat shit piss mate and cull out prey animals. They are protected by law because other than being an occasional nuisance to hikers who take risks in traveling on the Mountain Lion's turf, the animals are doing well.

Republicans - fuck infrastructure. Let this country die. I want my rights back.
From 2001 to 2008, millions of jobs moved to China. Over 40,000 factories closed. Republicans held both houses, the presidency and the Supreme Court.
Brilliant...just fucking brilliant.

Yeah.... you do realize that infrastructure doesn't' create jobs right?

And again, a child demands stuff. Adults consider what they can afford. It's funny because in 2008, you people on the left were screaming about Bush's $400 Billion deficit. But then you expect him to spend endlessly on 'infrastructure'.

Of course then the irony continued, because in 2009 you passed a massive $800 Billion stimulus package, which didn't stimulate anything, and only about $100 Billion went to infrastructure. And the very instant that this was done... you people on the left started screaming we should have spent more.

We did spend more. $700 Billion more. And you people on the left, had the House... the Senate... and the Presidency.... and you didn't spend enough on infrastructure? You blew throw $800 Billion, and only put about 14% of that towards infrastructure... and you had 100% control over the government? And you want to blame who for your complete and total incompetence?

No one to blame but yourselves.

Building and maintaining infrastructure does create jobs, short term (building) and long term (maintaining). How anyone can believe otherwise is mind blowing.

Consider the interstate highway system. How many business loops were created, building retail food, fuel and lodging structures; how many people are employed in the restaurants, hotels, motels, campgrounds and other services along thousands of miles of highway? How many state troopers patrol these miles, how many tow operators and repair shops aid the stranded traveler?

How many long haul truckers are on these roads everyday, and how many businesses are dependent on their goods being transported to and from retail establishments?
What's your point?
The fact is we have a reliable rail freight system. So you need......What?
I would like a high speed rr much like those in Europe!

We subsidize every Amtrack ticket to the tune of about $60 on average, we could buy first class air fare for those going from FL to CA and spend less. Amtrack should be sold if they can find a sucker, or closed down.

On every point, that's just crap, crap, and more crap. It's more crap than even I want to explain to you. It wasn't that long ago, you ought to be able to remember the details for yourself, but you choose to make it up as you go along.

Here's an intellectual exercise for you. Google the points you just brought up. Stay away from the right (and even left) wing blog and opinion sites and go straight for the real data - I assure you, it does exist. Prove that you're right.

Pouring one billion dollars per year into a dysfunctional rail system is not an example of investing in the country.
AMTRAK should be sold off to the private sector. That will never happen as the democrats would have to weather a storm of protests from union officials and member workers of the Railroad Worker's Union.
BTW, why the hell should I take AMTRAK to say Northern NJ when I can get there three times as fast at half the cost?
And once I get to where I'm going would have to rent a car anyway?.....
I like trains. I think the country should have passenger rail service all over the place. But I am not willing to have my taxes increased so that some over stuffed government agency full of over indulged crooked bureaucrats can screw it up.

Why do think there has been no push to privatize any public transit system? Even air travel is heavily subsidized by the government - and if it wasn't, their profit margins would shrink to the point that there would be no investors to offset losses. And, when you get to where you're going, you still need to rent that same car.

But you're right. $1 Billion is barely enough to cover Amtrak's operating expenses (they had asked for a little more than twice that amount in their budget request), and surely wouldn't represent an investment in the country. To really invest, we'd need something closer to $1 Trillion (and maybe more) and we'd need to be willing to do that over 10 years or so. Amtrak is dysfunctional - it uses commercial railways that were designed to ship materials, goods, and livestock to port cities around the country. What's really needed are dedicated rails, and a system that services more areas and gets us closer to door to door service (say within a city block) through vastly improved public transit systems. But, sorry to say, that means we have to pay for it through taxation - the bright side of that is that with more areas being served, municipal revenues should also increase which would offset personal taxes.

You're also right about the bureaucrats - but, IMO, they have screwed the system not by messing with things that didn't need to be messed with, but by not messing with things that did. Slashing Amtrak's budget request in half because it's losing riders is mismanagement too.

Do we? In just the last year, how many derailments have happened which resulted in cataclysmic fireballs? How many have either contaminated or threatened to contaminate water supplies? How many required people to run from their homes either from the threat of more explosions or the dispersal of deadly chemicals (which are sent by rail because they're too dangerous to send down a crowded interstate)? In case you've lost count, here's some interesting reading on the reliability of our rail freight system.
