Has Barack Obama learned nothing in three years? Last night, during his State of the Union address, he promised “a blueprint for an economy.” But economies are crushed by blueprints.

Politicians like Obama believe they are the best judges of how we should conduct our lives. Of course a word like “blueprint” would occur to the president. He, like most who want his job, aspires to be the architect of a new society. But we who love our lives and our freedom say: No, thanks. We need no social architect. We need liberty under law.

That’s it.

If Obama really wanted, as he says, a society in which “everybody gets a fair shot,” he would work to shrink government so that the sphere of freedom could expand. Instead, he expands government and raises taxes on wealthier people, as though giving politicians more money were a way to make society better. Instead, the interventionist state rigs the game on behalf of special interests....

What should Obama have said in his speech? Here’s what I wish he’d said:

Our debt has passed $15 trillion. It will reach Greek levels in just 10 years.

But if we make reasonable cuts to what government spends, our economy can grow us out of our debt. Cutting doesn't just make economic sense, it is also the moral thing to do. Government is best which governs least.

We'll start by closing the Department of Education, which saves $100 billion a year. It’s insane to take money from states only to launder it through Washington and then return it to states.

Next, we’ll close the Department of Housing and Urban Development. That saves $41 billion. We had plenty of housing in America before a department was created.

Then we eliminate the Commerce Department: $9 billion. A government that can’t count votes accurately should not try to negotiate trade. We will eliminate all corporate welfare and all subsidies. That means agriculture subsidies, green energy subsidies, ethanol subsidies and so on. None of it is needed.

I propose selling Amtrak. Why is government in the transportation business? Let private companies compete to run the trains.

And we must finally stop one of the biggest assaults on freedom and our pocketbook: the war on drugs. I used drugs. It’s immoral to imprison people who do what I did and now laugh about.

Still, all these cuts combined will only dent our deficit. We must cut Medicare, Social Security and the military.

Which explains why Stossel is a hack media "pundit" and never held elected office.
Spending is the same as it was under Reagan.
Eliminating departments sounds like doing something, but it's not really.
You think it'll be cheaper to put your kids through college if we eliminate the dept of education? You think the PRIVATE SECTOR will step up and fund education? BWAH HA HA HA HA HA!

Stossel is clown shoes.

Oh...I see.....our elected officials are doing such a great job we are able to define someone as worthy of criticizing public office based on whether they have been in public office or not.

Sure. Makes plenty of sense.

That really is a very weak-minded retort.

I agree with a lot of what Stossel stated.

He may not have ever held office but he has load of common sense.

Common sense which is sadly lacking in our elected officials in DC.

Stossel is a libertarian.

If he actually believes that " Government is best which governs least", then why not go for a perfect government--anarchism? I will tell you why. Libertarians know that government is needed for something, but that can't quite put their finger on it.

1)Libertarians are usually confident in defending themselves
2)Libertarians hate social restrictions placed on drugs, gambling, porn etc
3)Libertarians believe that citizens think rationally and will act in their best interest.

The above is conditionally true. That is there are cases where the above falls apart, like getting attacked by a gang of thugs, the results of addictions(to drugs and gambling. I tend to think porn is ok, just not for minors) and that some people are just dumb and letting them wander hopelessly about is just painful to watch!

So Reagan spent 5 trillion in 3 years?
It will be cheaper to educate our children once we do away with the department of education and teachers unions, notice I did not say "teachers" I said teachers unions that strangle the education system and hold our children's educations hostage. Also, my brother is a teacher and in the teachers union, I wish his was done away with as well.
Education is a states rights issue, not a federal one.

Yeah, i'm pretty sure we shouldn't count on you for judging who's a 'good reporter' or not. After all, you are a GE/MSNBC-watchin Dummy. :)

John misunderstood Obama.

The blueprint is for getting him re-elected. Over 50% of the populace are members of the parasitic faction, they vote early and often and love soak the rich speeches.

I hear ya. Good point.

I agree with most of Stossel's 'speech'--I doubt there is anybody on Earth that I agree with on every aspect of every issue, however.

I agree that Obama gave a pretty good campaign speech last night, and I think 90% or more of it was pure smoke and mirrors with absolutely no substance behind it. Too much was stuff he could have been promoting for the last three years and hasn't. He religiously ignored the worst problems of deficits, debt, and the reasons that commerce and industry is sitting on trillions of dollars of assets instead of putting them back into the economy.

He sidestepped the 50% of American wage earners who pay little or nothing in federal taxes and again suggested that those who are in a position to create jobs pay more of the already huge share that they pay. Of course that exacerbates the problem of those folks sheltering their assets instead of investing them.

Stossel got all that right.

Yes, eliminate the Dept. of Education because an educated population is not a vital national interest in today's world, because stupid people can easily find good paying jobs.

Yes, eliminate the Commerce dept. because the founders didn't really mean that interstate commerce was a matter for federal jurisdiction when they put it in the Constitution.

And how about eliminating the FDA, and put the thrill back in eating and taking medicine?

You, and Stossel, are idiots.
