Israel’s military is expanding its operations in the Gaza Strip, but has avoided calling it a “ground invasion” despite sending tanks into the territory. That’s by design, security analysts say.

Saturday marked the start of the “second stage” of Israel’s war against Hamas, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning that the fight will be “long and difficult,” amid rising risks of a wider Middle East conflict.

Once this is over I would like to read the book. Like many military operations and adventures forced on a people, they will be learning on the fly and adapting to an entirely new circumstance. If they succeed it will be instructive to the next military that must engage in such circumstances.
