Is this what the left means when they say progress?

Poll: 40 Percent Of Millennials Want Speech Censored

I'm really struggling to figure out what definition of the word "liberal" is being applied by millennialis? I always thought that liberal meant something that is freeing in that we are free to say whatever we want no matter who it offends. The entire reason we have laws that prevent the government from restricting communication is to protect unpopular speech. The only communication that is ever censored are things we find repugnant such as pornagraphy, unpopular political speech, political speech that threatens those in power, and just about every other type of communication that any two human beings can engage in.

What if these liberals really didn't believe that at all? Wouldnt they find it exceptable to censor speech in cases of racism? We can find countless examples of this happening. We can expect this kind of stuff with social conservatives who prevent other people from buying adult publications but wouldn't a liberal philosophy defend a person's right to say what they want whenever they want.

I know racist are repugnant but even racist have rights in this country to express themselves and use whatever insult they want against other people. I just don't see where the first amendment says we have the freedom of speech--except for these cases.

My next point is that freedom to communicate is essential to democracy since everything needs to be vigorously debated in order for the best course of action to be taken. That can only happen in an environment where people are not restricted whatsoever from saying what they want.

Are conservatives going to run on the first amendment because I thought that battle was won over two hundred years ago. It just seems like we are going backwards not forward.
