SEOUL — Even as the Bush administration seeks a negotiated settlement to the North Korean nuclear standoff, an intimidating array of high-tech weaponry, much of it battle-tested in Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan (news - web sites), is being deployed south of the demilitarized zone that divides the Korean peninsula.

The weaponry has been quietly moved into South Korea (news - web sites) since the summer as part of a significant restructuring of the 37,000 U.S. troops in the country. In return for moving soldiers away from the DMZ, the Pentagon (news - web sites) promised Seoul that it would spend $11 billion to bring in the latest armaments.

"More lethality with fewer people," is the way one security analyst described the new mantra of the Pentagon when it comes to the Korean peninsula.

Having done two tours over there, i can tell you they need us there about as much as germany needs us over there. It wouldnt bother me one tiny bit to see our service personel over there suddenly reassigned stateside.
11 Billion?? Your ass, its north VS south. sound familiar to anyone? So the north takes it over, big deal. how big is it anyway? about the size of Idiana? the one thing they cant be allowed to do is have nukes. all these threats are doing right now is trying to hold the international community hostage with lil kims "if you dont give us money were going to develop nukes". its getting old. personally, id ratehr see saddam with WMD that i would NK. saddam i dont think, would be stupid enough to use them on the US, but lil kim is jsut crazy enough to do something rash like that.

I couldn't agree more. At least Saddam was predictable if that can be a considered a positive trait. Kim Jong Il is a dangerous madman with no disregard for any of his people. It may suprise some people on this board, but if the US or China went preemptive war with NK I'd support it. It is a clear and present danger.

if we do a pre-emptive on NK i think we may be in for some trouble. it may be small, but his military is large. combined with brain washing his country against us.... it could be costly.
I can see his wanting a little respect for his country, but come on. i understand that all third world countries want to be a super power, but hes going about it all wrong.

Ha! Kim Jong Il has no respect for his country. He is no different than his father. He is all about self-glory. His version of socialist state is even more repressive than that soviet state, insofar that its even revisionist in its history!

But you're right NK is no push over, but there's also no doubt that he's the big bad boy on the block. He puts Saddam and Khomeini to shame.

everyone here is assuming kim jung il is even still alive. he hasen't been seen since october he wasen't even seen today on the 12th anniversary of him coming to power. add this to the fact that his once exhiled son was allowed to return recently and his wife's "accident" and possable death maybe ole kim off'd himself. then again maybe he was given exhile in china and those 100K+ chinese troops sitting on the 837 mile long boarder with n korea since augest are going to move into n korea to keep the peace and prevent a flood of refugees into china after it is annouced that kim has left power. then again thats just my opinion.

Well other than the son being there, that would be a great way to start the New Year.

That would be a VERY interesting development indeed!

It is sooooo strange that he hasn't been seen since oct 31. It would be a tough battle in nk, people are brainwashed to believe nk is the best place on earth.
