Even though it will cost us in the short-run without IP protection the US will be dead in the water in the not too distant future

The IP issue is an overstated problem. I have no interest in protecting the IP rights of companies that offshore their IP holdings in order to offshore their profits. In addition, many of these companies actually consent to IP sharing as a condition of doing business in China. Don't like it, don't move your manufacturing there. Trump isn't doing anything but protecting the worst offenders in job displacement.
