How do people survive on minimum wage?

---(They don't they just exist after 3 years they become zombies)----

Article> One of my clients recently reported getting a job at a fast-food restaurant. Since she's been unemployed and desperately looking for work for nearly a year, I was thrilled for her. She was very excited that she'll be making $7.50 an hour -– a whole quarter more than minimum wage.

After she left my office, I got out a calculator. I've never worked for minimum wage, so I didn't know exactly how much -- or how little -- money that is.

Assuming 80 hours per pay period, my client will be bringing home around $462 every two weeks. That's with no health insurance or retirement contributions.

If I brought home $924 a month, would I even be able to survive? I decided to find out.

So...how much are you giving her?

You're not going to say that the extent of your concern was this OP, are you?

'Cause that would make you.....what.....a Liberal?

...And guilty of making a BAD choice?:eusa_whistle:

There are also jobs for which minimum wage does not apply. I think the going rate for table waiters here in Atlanta is $2.13/hr. They are expected to make up the difference by hustling for tips...giving good service, etc. A decent bartender makes $5.00/hr.

I tip rather heavily wherever I eat and drink because I know these people don't make shit compared to my salary...and they're just tryin' to make a livin'...put some bread on the table for those grubby little crumb snatchers crawlin' around the home place.

I feel a bit of guilt every time I treat myself to a new thousand dollar pistol...happened again just yesterday.

You can send your pistol to me to assuage your guilt.

Of course I have no use for a $1k pistol. But whatever.

How about a $2500 Python?

I know from experience(and being very frugal) that it's also very difficult to make ends meet on $10 an hour.

I only make a bit more than that right now. I work at a non profit and they cannot afford to pay that much. It's hard work for not a lot of pay.

Most people only Start out Making Minimum Wage. If you are still making Minimum Wage at the Same Job 10 Years later. Perhaps you are not a very good worker? Or not very Motivated to go out and find a better Job?

Minimum Wage Jobs are suppose to be Entry level Jobs, not a career.

They don't, they can't, I've been saying that for years, more than 75% of those working for minimum wage are adults and minimum wage currently has the lowest spending power in history. In the richest country in the world, the poorest worker should make a living wage.

What is a 'living wage'? Given that if a business increases what it pays its workers, it generally has to increase the price to its customers... therefore the cost of living goes up, which means the 'living wage' is no longer a 'living wage' which means it needs to be increased... which leads to increased prices to customers, which leads to an increase in the cost of living, which leads to an increase in the 'living wage', which leads to.... I think you get where I'm going with this. There is no simple answer... and people really should recognize that and stop expecting simple answers.

So, what is the complex answer?

The callous conservative answer is, "it's all about personal responsibility"; and that CG is a simple answer and a simple solution solved by saying or thinking, "I got mine, screw the rest of them".
The callous liberal answer is to double the min wage, throwing half the people out of work, putting them on welfare and blaming Bush.

It's more than many Americans make in this economy. I have to consider myself lucky that I chose a field that caters to the wealthy and middle class.

I make over minimum wage but when I started my job I made minimum wage and was fucking glad to have it too.....You can all bitch about how small amount of money it is but it is a hell of a lot more then nothing you greedy idiot liberals. I got raises based on my performance the way it is suppose to be. I still dont make much money but I still am grateful cause it helps feed my family without being a welfare slave.

I actually sold the Python I had bought int he mid-80s. Now I'm looking for another Ruger Security 6 snub. If I wanted a big ole .357mag I'd buy a Smith 686SSR.

Great, a thread for you to bitch about welfare recipients! Hurray!

That posts reflects some common train of thinking on this thread.
But then there's the real world too.

The Loss of Upward Mobility in the U.S
Economic mobility is becoming a more prominent issue in the 2012 Republican presidential race, and will likely be widely discussed in the general election. The GOP’s remaining top-tier candidates — Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich — have all sounded the alarm about American decline, promising to restore the “American Dream” and make the pursuit of happiness seem like more of a worthwhile endeavor (as Romney as consistently hammered on about recently). But what’s shocking is that rather than focusing on the American Dream these days, politicians and academics seem to be talking more about the European Dream.

That person could very well get government assistance towards food, healthcare, housing, energy, etc.,

all paid for by the taxpayer.

In other words, the corporation gets cheap labor at an unlivable wage, and we the taxpayers pay a subsidy to that working person, towards livability (if that's a word).

It's one more way the corporations screw you.

And they wouldn't be RECIPIENTS for Welfare but for WHAT?

Care to expand Cowfart?

The callous liberal answer is to double the min wage, throwing half the people out of work, putting them on welfare and blaming Bush.

The republican answer is to eliminate the minimum wage completely, force people to work for 3$ an hour sending the former working class into mass poverty, on welfare, and blaming Obama.

GIVE ME A BREAK!

CRY cry cry... you beat you chest with faux angst!

THERE SHOULD BE NO minimum wage!

millions of teen agers would be employed!
Crime would be down!

BUT you pompous people don't you know it IS BECAUSE of minimum wage we have
unemployment records!!!

Right NOW I have at my age of 69 5 business opportunities that can employ over 1,000 people ! I can't put them into reality BECAUSE investors are afraid of the uncertainty that OBAMA HAS WROUGHT!
Investors keep seeing more and more of their startup money being consumed by Federal regulations, paper pushing reporting and it is stifling any job creation.

For example... there is a concept I'm aware of that will INSURE people's venture investment for people investing up to $20,000 and they keep the investment.!
Would you take a chance on that concept though?
NO even though it would INSURE your investing principle because YOU won't take any risks with your meager savings! FINANCING/LENDING criteria is tough!

AND YOU pompously beating your chest about oh...how are they making it... sob sob!!
DO something! Vote the job killing President out of office!

Do you realize HIS EPA is:
The thing is, even though the EPA is regulating the life out of the coal industry in the United States, other nations are mining without any regulations
http://resourcefulearthnews.org/2011/06/09/epa-regulations-costing-jobs-and-making-you-pay-more-for-energy/

How big do they expect the impact to be? The study estimates that the proposed changes “would lead to nationwide employment losses totaling 1.44 million job-years by 2020 and increase Americans average electricity bills by 11.5 percent.” (To avoid confusion, the term “job-year” equates to one full time job for one person for one year.)
Study shows EPA regs will cost, not create, jobs « Hot Air

Just two examples of JOB KILLING Obama Administration!

So don't beat your chest in phony concern.. BEAT the pavement in getting OBAMA OUT!!

No one forces anyone to work, asswipe. But Dems force employers to pay over-market wages. Which is why the black teen unemployment rate is 40%. Do you care about that? No, of course not. Because you are an asswipe.

Black_FABLE is one of those dweebs that thinks companies exist ONLY to give people JOBS, and revenue to the GUBMINT, and nothing else...

What is a 'living wage'?
A living wage ? 1/4 oz a week plus a fifth every other day and enough money to take a two week vacation to the other side of the country once a year.
Boats, Harley's, snowmobiles, casinos-hookers and plasma TV's are not included.
