House speaker live updates: Republicans nominate Jim Jordan in private vote

Jim Jordan won in the closed-door vote. Whether he can get to 217 votes needed is not known as this story broke.

Jim Jordan will be, at least initially, popular with a lot of Republicans/Patriots/conservative Independents. But he is an unknown when it comes to being Speaker who not only has to have the skill to keep a GOP coalition together but also skills to negotiate with Democrats and also be a money raising machine.

McCarthy was effective in negotiations with Democrats--the very thing he has been most condemned for--and extremely effective in raising money for campaign coffers and super pacs. He was less successful in keeping a GOP coalition together but did pretty darn well. If we voters had given the GOP a larger majority in the House he would still be Speaker.

Whether Jordan possesses the same ability, I don't know. Whomever is the next Speaker I will hope so.

Jim Jordan Rejected In First Round Ballot, Signaling More Turmoil Ahead.

WASHINGTON (AP) — More turmoil ahead, Republicans rejected Rep. Jim Jordan for House speaker on a first ballot Tuesday, as an unexpectedly numerous 20 holdouts denied the hard-charging ally of Donald Trump the GOP majority needed to seize the gavel.

Additional voting was expected as the House hit a standstill, stuck while Jordan works to shore up support from Republican colleagues to replace the ousted Kevin McCarthy for the job. Reluctant Republicans are refusing to give Jordan their votes, viewing the Ohio congressman as too extreme for the powerful position of House speaker, second in line to the presidency.

It’s been two weeks of angry Republican infighting since McCarthy’s sudden removal by hard-liners, who are now within reach of a central seat of U.S. power. The vote for House speaker, once a formality in Congress, has devolved into another bitter showdown for the gavel.

Gym JorDumb received 200-Votes.

Hakeen Jeffries received 212-Votes.

Twenty Republicans voted for either McCarthy, Scalise or they voted "Other".

How many Republicans promised support JorDumb on the first ballot and how many will defect on the second.

JorDumb is NOT popular within the Republican Caucus. He deeply involved the Jan.6 Insurrection. Not the man for the job.
