    I remember when I lived in China and people (lots and lots of people) would draw circles in the middle of the road or on sidewalks and burn 'hell bank notes' to send to departed relatives. Even way back then the authorities were trying to discourage it but folks kept up their traditions and beliefs all the same.

    Many cultures have similar traditions that seem to fall around the same time of the year (for obvious reasons).
