Republicans Just Made It Easier For Companies To Exploit Workers
They vacated an Obama executive order that would have punished federal contractors that rip off or endanger employees.
WASHINGTON — Employers who cheat their workers or endanger their lives now have one less thing to worry about, courtesy of the GOP Congress.
Senate Republicans voted Monday to kill an executive order issued by former President Barack Obama known as the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces rule. The 49-48 vote, with all Democrats opposed, eliminates a regulation issued late in Obama’s presidency that would have made it harder for companies to secure federal contracts if they have a documented history of wage theft or workplace hazards.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Keystone XL oil pipeline won’t use American steel in its construction, despite what President Donald Trump says.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Friday that’s due to language in a presidential directive Trump issued in January. The directive applies to new pipelines or those under repair. Sanders said it would be hard to do an about-face on Keystone because it’s already under construction and the steel has been acquired.
Trump said as recently as last week that Keystone and the Dakota Access pipeline must use American steel “or we’re not building one.”
