Greastest Metal Bands/artists of all time

I can't really agree with you on that one. Even the Metallica that I like I rarely ever listen to anymore. It just doesn't hold up for me. Crest of a Knave is still a regular in the rotation.

I guess I just could never get used to the newer Tull, like Knave or Rock Island.

I love Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, Minstrel in the gallery, Songs from the Wood...the new stuff just isn't the same music.

If I listened to the new stuff, I'd probably learn to like it...but it just isn't Tull to me.

And FWIW, Crest of a Knave makes it into my top 5 Tull albums of all time.

What are your top 5 Tull songs?

Mine are (off the top of my head and 2-5 in no particular order)

1. Aqualung
2. Minstrel in the Gallery
3. Songs from the Woods
4. Thick as a Brick (in its entirety)
5. Fat Man

And the list could go on...

And the list could go on...

That's a tough one...

1. Skating Away on the thin ice of a new day
2. Baker Street Muse
3. Thick as a Brick (in its entirety)
4. Cup of Wonder
5. A Passion Play (in its entirety)

If I disqualified the full length album songs, I'd replace them with:

3. Mountain Men
5. Minstrel in the Gallery

These are probably my top ten in metal:

1) Iron Maiden
2) Black Sabbath
3) Judas Priest
4) Dio
5) [Old] Metallica
6) Opeth
7) Slayer
8) Helloween
9) Blind Guardian
10) Accept

Honorable Mentions: Angra, Stratovarius, Pantera, Megadeth, Solo Ozzy, Iced Earth, Rammstein, Rhapsody, Tool, [old] In Flames.

Metal?

Iron Maiden
Megadeth
Metallica (Justice, and earlier)
Anthrax
Accept
King Diamond
Judas Priest

And, for all of 2 songs, Slayer). :D

2 songs, eh? I beg to differ. Half of the people on this board probably don't even kow who king diamond is.. letalone Accept. Hell, you'd be lucky if half of that half could even remember the one hit, Balls to the wall, by that band. and you think Slayer only had 2 good songs?

pshhh.. i'd stack the career of Slayer against anyone on your list.

Best Metal Album:

Crest of a Knave - Jethro Tull

WTF.....Tull METAL??.....thats like saying Iron Maiden is country....

That's the thing about a great band like Tull, it's hard to pigeon hole them into a particular genre. But they most definitely tread on metal grounds. Just check out this one from the archives. Of course you'll have to skip ahead to the two minute mark before the "metal" kicks in. And as an aside, it also showcases Martin Barre's talents on the guitar. Easily one the most underrated IMO. Few people know that he beat out Tony Iommi for the Tull job after Mick Abrahams quit the band.

*cough* bullshit *cough*

The only way JT becomes metal is via punchlines about Grammy judges. Using distortion doesn't make something metal.

No band that has a flute, is remotely metal!

That's a prerequisite for metal. No flutes.

And at least handfull of songs about the Devil.

I disagree on the flute thing. I think it's the style of music that defines the musical style. :D Not the instruments. And they do have a few songs about the devil.

You have to "wait" for the "metal" to "kick in"?

LOL!

Sorry, Mani, but...c'mon. It either is, or is not. :)

there are some ver melodic metal bands that use flute sounds so, you are right, it's not so much about the particular instrument as the style. Nothing in JTs entire catalog is metal.

There are several Black Sabbath tunes with acoustic segments. So I guess that makes them not metal by your standards. :doubt:

How well versed are you in Tull's entire catalog?

And again, I know it's not easy to do, but try to put into words what makes a piece of music metal. If anyone can do it, you can.

Don't make that face at me. With Sabbath you have to wait for the parts that aren't metal. Overall, they are metal. Overall, Tull is not metal (and is icky.)
