Think Progress Right-Wing Pundit Phyllis Schlafly Decries Government Assistance For ?Unmarried Moms?

70% of unmarried women voted for Obama. And this is because when you kick your husband out, you’ve got to have Big Brother Government to be your provider.

Schlafly’s argument is specious. She talks about “subsidizing illegitimacy,” but not all single women are mothers. Less than 20 percent are mothers to young children. The rest include millions of widows, millions of young never-married women, and plenty in between — some of whom have kids, but most of whom do not.

The fact that programs like UI and food stamps help unmarried women is only a byproduct of the system designed to help everyone in need – men and women alike. In fact, men are receiving more UI benefits than women – the unemployment rate for men is a full 2.2 points higher than it is for women.

All the other errors of feminism flow from this one fundamental error, a counterfactual insistence on the equality of the sexes. Men and women are not the same, and therefore are not equal.

Apparently, women can only "make it" if they are supported by a "man". Well, at least Phyllis Schlafly isn't targeting the gays anymore. Perhaps she saw how bad she was hurting her son?

She's actually right. Remove the incentive to keep a husband around and you won't.

RDean once again hoist on his petard.

Oh my, this is gonna really hurt the republicans this fall. I wonder what Shirley Sherrod's husband thinks?

Well, if all men were like you, that would certainly be true:lol:

It isn't about women relying on men. It's about men getting off their asses and fulfilling their responsibilities to themselves, to God, to their partners, to their children etc.

My God, she lives. Die hard wingnuts will always support her ravings.

She's right. Anyone who has common sense and is for personal responsibility is always demonized by the left.

How it relying on someone else for personal responsibility showing "common sense"?:cuckoo:

Your sentence doesn't make sense. Did you misspell a word? People used to rely on family instead of government. That is, until government got bigger and bigger and forced people to rely on it.

Hmmm, could it be that some of you guys just aren't equal to the investment of time, effort, and money anymore?

Why is it that when men didn't want to "buy the cow," it was considered a truism, but when women discover that they don't want to take any bull while working double shifts (one unpaid) and paying half or more than half of the household bills, its the end of Western civilization?

Maybe if you prettied yourselves up at the end of the day, made yourselves more attractive, cleaned up the house, made us some dinner, and met us at the door with a drink, a smile, and a sympathetic ear at the end of OUR long work day, you could keep more of your wimmins interested in hauling most of your freight. :eusa_whistle:

Some people rely on hard work and common sense. Everyone relies on the government to protect us from Republican deregulation and greed. Except when they are elected into public office. Then we are at their mercy. 8 years under Bush showed us that.

Perhaps I'm unable to see the tree through the fog. Seems to me that if a woman wants to remain single, that's her right. If she also wants to have a child or several and can care for them, it's also her right. There are some that manage this, though they are the exception. Most 'single' mothers that are able to raise a child or several on their own are educated, were married, and receive child support. Even then, most are still mired in debt and overwhelmed between working full-time, keeping their skills sharp, keeping home in shape, and keeping the kids on track regarding activities, studies, and attention.

I'd posit there are a lot of women choosing to do just that, problem is many aren't caring for their kids or sustaining their 'family' reasonably well. They are looking for the government to do what most two parent households do normally. So far for the most part, the government has stepped in financially to mitigate, that doesn't address the overwhelming time constraints that fall on single parent-of either sex. One could argue and too many do, that the government should help out beyond financial. Considering how poorly many schools do their job, not to mention state legislatures, and DMV's I'd much rather trust family and friends to give a hand when single parent is overwhelmed. Indeed, most single parents would very much like to have another set of hands rather than the government.

While Schlafly's thinking may be based on a time in the past, the basic truth about raising children isn't. It takes time, money, effort, and someone to talk to after the kids finally go to bed.

In more-"conservative"-circles, it's referred-to as fulfilling the "traditional"-role (of being a woman); extremely-critical for the welfare of "conservative"-male egos.

Ah, yes.....we can't forget about all o' those Absolutes that determine the roles of ALL God-fearin' men & women!!!

* It's a man's responsibility to take-care o' the woman.

* It's a woman's prerogative to change her mind.

****

BTW, Avatar4321....EVERY God-fearin' woman is expected to KNOW their place/estimation.

Ol' ReRon Reagan was the FIRST President I'd ever heard, who'd suggested....If there isn't work, where you're living, move to where there ARE jobs. (....a sentiment that's always resurrected, after Republicans have driven our economy into-the-ground.)

Do "conservatives" REALLY want to debate WHICH Party is responsible for the break-up of The American Family???????

God Bless the Child that's got his Own
by Billie Holiday / Arthur Herzog Jr.

Them that's got shall get
Them that's not shall lose
So the Bible said and it still is news
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

Yes, the strong gets more
While the weak ones fade
Empty pockets don't ever make the grade
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

Money, you've got lots of friends
Crowding round the door
When you're gone, spending ends
They don't come no more
Rich relations give
Crust of bread and such
You can help yourself
But don't take too much
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own
He just worry 'bout nothin'
Cause he's got his own

Ya know...if you really value family then it seems to me that supporting POLS who constantly vote to make it harder for working families to survive just stikes me as a bad idea.

Partsians on both sides of the asile obviously seem to disagree.
