That's the argument. More states voted for Trump, more people voted for Clinton. What a person considers more important between those choices (or if they believe some other characteristic is more important or there is a better way) will determine their stand in the EC vs popular vote argument.
However, simply removing California from the equation in order to reach the numbers you want does not indicate "the will of the people." Californians are part of "the people."
