Everybody should pay fifty percent of their income in Federal Taxes.

Nobody should pay a nickel of their income in federal taxes. Capital gains are another story.

The Danes pay 70% of their income in taxes, and they are the happiest people on earth.

Denmark: The Happiest Place on Earth - ABC News

Could the Danes really be the happiest people in the world? When ABC News anchor Bill Weir traveled there to find out, he asked random Danes to rate themselves in terms of happiness, on a scale of one to 10. Many people rated themselves at least an eight, and there were several nines and 10s. Finally, one grouchy Dane came along who said she didn't believe Danes were so happy. But then she quickly conceded that she herself felt rather content with her life, and said Danes in general had very little to complain about.

Danes do have one potential complaint: high taxes. The happiest people in the world pay some of the highest taxes in the world -- between 50 percent and 70 percent of their incomes. In exchange, the government covers all health care and education, and spends more on children and the elderly than any country in the world per capita. With just 5.5 million people, the system is efficient, and people feel "tryghed" -- the Danish word for "tucked in" -- like a snug child.

Those high taxes have another effect. Since a banker can end up taking home as much money as an artist, people don't chose careers based on income or status. "They have this thing called 'Jante-lov,' which essentially says, 'You're no better then anybody else,'" said Buettner. "A garbage man can live in a middle-class neighborhood and hold his head high."
Higher taxes = more happiness. Who knew??

I don't know that happy would be appropriate. Content might be more descriptive. The people have been reduced to infantilism. As long as they have a clean diaper and a binky they are happy.

You really think that they would pay down the debt?
They would create more programs and spend it all Neubarth.
getting 2.2 trillion already in taxes is what has caused this crappy mess.

That is very simple to effect. We just have Congress pass a law restricting their spending and then have the President decree (Remember he has a right to issue Decrees and does so all of the time) that any congressman proposing to spend more money than was spend in 2000 be sent to Guantanamo as a economic terrorist. EASY. Congress would stop foolish spending overnight.

Please elaborate.

Everybody should pay fifty percent of their income in Federal Taxes. That is after the first $40,000 in income which should be Tax Free. That $40,000 will be called the subsistence income and everybody in the United States will be allowed that.

I believe in what is fair is fair. Income Taxes shall and WILL be uniform across the nation and across the economic classes....

I disagree with your percentage but like your approach.

I like that you say on the first XX,XXX of income you odn't pay taxes, i would make it lower about 30k but whatever thats not a big deal.

I also like that it APPEARS (correct me if i'm wrong) that your taxes on all people over the threshold will be uniform and there will be no deductions/exemptions for any reason, correct?

I think 50% is way too high, 20-25% with zero exemptions/deductions sounds more appropriate to me.

In general I like where you are going but the specifics we differ.

Drop the income tax and move over to a progressive consumption tax, exempting people from the bare necessities and minimum consumption level.

Labor should have never been taxed in the first place.
Totally insane as it would free the money grubbers to invest and grow wealthier and wealthier while the burden of taxation would be passed to the lower classes.

Right. Except of course for those classes wherein folks earn $39,999,99 or less a year. They'll pay nothing, but also probably be mad at you for taking away whatever goodies they got in addition to not paying anything under the old IRS system.

Do a little research. Google the topic of "presidential Decrees" and read up. There have been thousands of Presidential Decrees. The president has the power of a King if he wants to exercise it.

Danes are mindless little drones of their socialism.
Their system is horrible with no choice of anything.

Why should anyone have to pay 50% of what they make over $40,000 to a government that's bloated and inefficient? I work hard for my money. Before I give it to the Feds I'd like to see the government value the money I give them as much as I do. Get back to me when they aren't blowing billions on Solyndra and the Chevy Volt.

VERY SIMPLE! The United States is Trillions of Dollars in Debt after the bailout of the Banks. We have to balance the budget and we need to do it as of yesterday.

I believe a totally fair and equitable and uniform tax like that will solve our problems.

Amen! Praise God for logical solutions for our problems.

You're more insane than TM thought. You actually belive that if we give more to the government that the government will use it to pay off the debt????:cuckoo:

They will simply increase spending.

I guess fairness means that everyone gets to ride in the wagon while small business owners and corporations pull it.

First off, 50% tax is excessive for anybody's income. That includes the guy making 40k plus, that includes Mitt Romney.

Second, no one will ever advocate it because it is totally unpopular. Remembe, we are just talking Fed income tax, what about State tax and local taxes that are coming out of your income as well.

To answer the financial problem, you have to look at cutting spending first. That is before we talk about tax rates or any other channels of revenue. If we do not take into account our bad finacial habits, you can raise taxes to 200% of income and never get ahold of the budget.

Sad, but true.

YOu guys need to go to Grade School and learn a little addition and subtraction.

Notice I wisely did not include a deduction for children. Taxpayers should not have to pay for a lot of greasy babies being born.

Notice I wisely did say that EVERYBODY would be subject to this Tax, so a family of Two could make $80,000 a year tax free. IF they want to spend that raising kids, they can. IF they want to have a darn good time (without the financial burden of kids), they can do that too.

We would be paying off the national debt and reducing our birth rate at the same time. The United States and Germany would lead the world in ZPG. Amen Halleluia!

You must be referring to executive orders.

I rather doubt a president would get away with sending a congressman to Guantánamo.
