events that should not be in Olympics

There has to be a defense for it to be a sport. Someone has to be prevention you from meeting your goal; someone who can adapt as you do. Figure skating, diving, swimming, those things are not sports. Golf is not a sport. Football is a sport. Yet, I don't think The Olympics are about sports as much as physical human capabilities.
So track and field...not a sport?

There's no valid way to prevent your opponent from succeeding.
It's a competition.

Sure there is. If you do it better, faster, ect, your opponent does not succeed.

I get what you're saying. I've always associated sport with defensive strategy; a reaction to your opponent's actions. I like this topic. What do you think? Does it apply?

It depends on the sport. Some sports are competitions to see who can achieve the best time/score/whatever. Not sure defense would improve that.

My preferred sport relies heavily on defense.

Sure. I don't think (me personally, my thoughts) that a competition is necessarily a sport. If it doesn't have defense I don't call it a sport. I always get some argument from people. I know it's semantics, but I like to make this point. Maybe I shouldn't call defenseless games "sports", but if not a "sport" what would you call them?

Football has defense. Curling has defense.
Bowling doesn't have defense. Ice dancing doesn't have defense.

Pole vaulting, discus and the hurdles don't have defense. But I would call them a sport.

A sport like football, baseball, or curling? I know I'm splitting hairs, but it seems remarkably different to me.

I think the semantics are fine if you want them. Personally, I think they are sports like football and baseball. The difference is between team sports and individual sports.

anything that needs judges is not a sport:
figure skating
the diving events
etc
it should just be the fastest, farthest, highest, etc
..and then they added beach volleyball when there already was a volleyball event
morons.....
These are not sports, they are games. That is why it is called the "Olympic Games"

that's fine but dancing on skates is not a game or sport
we called our Track and Field events ''meets''
definition of game does say ''play''.....so if they are at ''play''
play
  1. engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose.
it seems more serious than not....these people train seriously for a long time
it should be just ''The Olympics'' then

Curling's a team activity, too, but then so's bowling. Billiards is a good example for a nonteam activity with strategy. I wonder if it's ever been in the olympics. Fencing's individual activity with strategy.

Dancing's tough and takes strength and skill , but it's such an arbitrary seeming point system that it's not a sport or game.

it appears they usually do different routines/dances

Then it's incomparable. It's just silly.

PC Nazis are gonna remove these kind of Olympic Sports. The network covering the games already hides them like 5X Porn and makes them invisible.

Figure skating CAN be defensive --- Ask Nancy Kerrigan.. Just sayin'...

Then baseball, which requires umpires to call balls and strikes isn’t a sport either. Neither are sports which require referees or linesmen since their opinions are subjective and can be corrupted (see soccer).

How can comment or make judgements on a sport you know nothing about at all? All you do is reveal your arrogance and your ignorance.

Ice dancers are marked on their difficulty and execution of their elements which are clearly defined, their skating skills and their performance.

The Short Dances have two “compulsory” dance sequences which are required and identical to all of the other competitors. This season it was the Rhumba. They are also required to do a dance spin, twizzles, a non-touch footwork sequence and a footwork sequence in dance hold. And two different lifts. Each element is assigned a baseline level which is determined by how difficult it is and how many “features” it has.

The skaters choose their elements creating unique moves, within the rules. They pick their music, the costumes and the order of their elements.

that's what it is --''dancing on skates''
why don't they just go out and do their triple whatever?? why all the dancing?
aren't they judged-- not marked?
