The president could be on the brink of making a serious mistake, one with grave implications for his political future and even graver implications for aging Americans. If he responds to this election by adopting the Deficit Commission's recommendation to cut Social Security, President Obama will be snatching catastrophe from the jaws of defeat. He'll be responding to the "voice of the people" by giving people something they really, really don't want.

There is a new cost-cutting budget out today. One of the recommendations is to raise SS full-benefits from 66 to 68 by 2050. Its a gradual transition, so no one feels bad. It cuts $4-trillion off the Debt by 2020, that should be back to $10T. Sounds too good to pass.

So you now post things from a source you say is unreliable?

I would hope Obama would cut the social security and medicare and veteran's benefits of all those who support the Tea Party.

Principles First!

I figured if it came from anything but a liberal source you would blow it off. Who would have thought you did this to the huffington post.

Obama had two years to deal with Social Security. The alarm did not sound overnight. Instead he used an unaccountable panel to kick the can until after the elections. And he isn't saying a damn thing about these recommendations.

I don't particularly like Huffington Post. I'm a liberal, not a progressive. I also did not blow it off.

Obama had 2 years to deal with Social Security? When? when he was rescuing the economy from years of conservative deregulation?

The panel? Did anyone fight the panel? Give some context. What in the whacky world of right wing spin are you talking about?

ROFL. This is the rambling post of an absolute moron.

"Obama had 2 years to deal with Social Security"

What, praytell, do you expect Obama to do about Social Security, besides organize panels and make recommendations?

Do you think Obama has some sort of magical power to control Social Security benefits?

That would be congress that controls the SS benefits purse strings.

He rammed through Obamacare, didn't he? He had to bribe some Senators to pass it.

Panels and recommendations from them are a trait of someone too weak to lead.

but, but, but, the Grand Inquisitor has issued a statement and a question. How dare you challenge his authority.

:eusa_shhh:

Not to mention the fact that the panel is right about Social Security, though Obama won't agree.

Social Security was designed to be a security net for people who couldn't take care of themselves in their old age. It has become a retirement plan.

When Social Security was started, the average lifespan was around 60-years-old. Now it is 78, and climbing every year. Quality-of-life and medical care have improved by leaps and bounds.

If we were to go by the standards of the people that enacted Social Security, the retirement age would be around 75 right now.

Not to mention the fact that the payroll tax rate has DOUBLED since Social Security was created.

Also: When SS started, the rate was 3%, it gradually rose over the years and is now at 6%, so if you wanted to make SS benefits FAIR, you would have to reduce the rate of benefit based on the age of the recipient.

He didn't "Ram through" anything. He has no power over what legislation Congress enacts except to Veto it. Period.
