Did we pay $1,191,200 for 2 pounds of frozen ham?

Get a grip on reality. The "stimulus package" was nothing more than a super pork bill designed to let incumbent congressmen grease the skids for their next "election". It has been a stimulus for the congressmen...not for the country.

It is too simple for Pelosi and Cronies to reduce or suspend taxation in order to let the American people spend money on what they really need...and this method does not increase the control of the governing few over the governed, so it hasn't happened.

The second "stimulus plan" will likely be more of the same.

A broke, socialistic country is emerging on the scene...thanks to Obama worshipers and other deluded followers of Karl Marx.

Again, just how STUPID do you have to be to even think for 1 second that that was the price paid for a mere 2 lbs of ham????
Do you really think Drudge didn't at least try to confirm whether it was for only 2 lbs of ham??? And if you believe he didn't make any attempt to follow up, what does that say about CON$ervative media???
CON$ hate America soooooo much that they want to believe everything bad about its government no matter how obviously wrong the claim might be.

So, how much Gubbamint ham did you actually get and do you really have ham and American cheese on white bread with mayo?

Proof of how pure hate makes CON$ gullible enough to swallow the most obvious of lies, and incapable of admitting they have been snookered again by their CON$ervative pundits.

I hear you, brother. Obama's spending trillions and you haven't even gotten a slice of ham.

Sucks to be all hopeful and Changey like that

Drudge is now a CON$ervative pundit? LOLOLOLoloOLOLOll Aggggawkkk, I just choked on my ham sandwich from laughing lololololBWahahahahhh Oh dear Lord, don't let me go out like Momma Cass Lololololololololol

The gullibility of CON$ never surprises me.
How STUPID do you have to be to believe anything from any CON$servative source, especially a proven liar like Drudge??? :cuckoo:

Look, Ed, do you honestly believe anyone actually believed that's what was paid for a mere two pounds of ham? Seriously? I know that, for me, it was simply an opportunity to have a little fun. I can remember the days when the government would pay $600.00 for a hammer or a toilet seat.

Drudge didn't pick up on this until this morning sometime, hours after this thread was started. Though I haven't been to the Drudge site for weeks, I went to the trouble of searching the archives over there for the sake of accuracy. While I was over there, I also noticed that he had a link to Vilsac's explanation of the charges for the ham in question which I posted earlier. Is that enough follow up for you?

As for hating America... I don't think anyone here hates America, not even you. Just because someone does not share your views or my views doesn't mean they hate America, it just means that they don't agree with our views.

After 10 years as inspector general of the Interior Department, Earl Devaney is on leave to head up the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, an oversight panel set up to put details of the $787 billion economic stimulus spending online by Oct. 10 and otherwise prevent waste, fraud and abuse of the money

Devaney: I think politicians have got their heads around the good sides of transparency. What they haven't got their minds around is the downside of transparency. Come October 11, there are going to be things up on that Web site that embarrass people, clearly. I don't think it is one party or the other. Everyone is going to be embarrassed to some extent.

I think that it is going to take a while for the American psyche to understand that this has been going on forever. What they are going to see in October, those that have worked in government long enough -- I know the way this spending looks, because I've seen the underbelly, but I don't think the American people have seen it yet. It is a sausage factory.

National Journal Online - Transparency Will Be Embarrassing, Stimulus Inspector Says

It's a sausage factory. Don't they make ham too?

Pundit? No. He does however some times write his own personal headlines to the stories he links to and often his headline refers to a single sentence in the linked story. It can be a story about the price of tea in China and if a single sentence quotes Hillary, he'll create a headline to bash her.

Now, I'm not defending Hillary as I am a conservative, but anyone who thinks that Drudge isn't conservative and skews headlines to his view needs their head examined.

Why is the government buying ham?
To exchange for votes in upcoming elections.

Add the "We got a ham" votes to the "We got cheese" votes and then factor in the votes of dead people, the second and third votes of those that can stand in multiple lines and vote repeatedly, the votes from the illegal aliens; subtract the votes objected to by ACORN as being invalid because they were mailed in or came from the military and you've got yourself an unbeatable political machine that keeps getting re-elected despite the fact that incompetence prevails in all facets of government.

Since the reply from Vilsac was a REPLY to Drudge's report, your "archive" with Vilsac's link could not be Drudge's first posting of the story. So no, that is not enough of a follow up for me.

USDA Releases A Rare Response To Drudge On Ham

It's not everyday that you see a government agency like USA responding to Drudge Report. Now USA has responded to Drudge's report on Glougherty Packing, LLC 2 pound frozen ham slicing funding and says it's not what you think it is.

Here is what USDA said in its own release: Response to Drudge Item on Recovery Act Funding. Statement from Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

"Through the Recovery Act, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has made $100 million available to the states for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which acquires food that is distributed to local organizations that assist the needy – including food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens.

The Recovery Act funds referenced in press reports allowed states to purchase ham, cheese and dairy products for these food banks, soup kitchens and food pantries that provide assistance to people who otherwise do not have access to food. This program will help reduce hunger of those hardest hit by the current economic recession.

The references to "2 pound frozen ham sliced" are to the sizes of the packaging. Press reports suggesting that the Recovery Act spent $1.191 million to buy "2 pounds of ham" are wrong. In fact, the contract in question purchased 760,000 pounds of ham for $1.191 million, at a cost of approximately $1.50 per pound.

I had guessed the "2 pounds" referred to the size of the packaging when I heard the story on the radio. Nonetheless, look at who's getting the money and you find a list of contributors to the campaign funds of their representatives in congress.

It is interesting also to study the payouts as they relate to which Presidential candidate won the county getting the money. It appears that counties that voted Obama are getting twice the funds per capita as those that voted McCain.

Sure you did, just like you checked who the recipients of the ham money donated to!!!
Just more blind hatred parroted by the brainwashed without proof.

Contract Gives Whole New Meaning to 'Pork' | Bob McCarty Writes

Realizing that’s a lot of pork — in terms of price, not weight — I set out to find out how a company like Clougherty Packaging could have landed such a windfall of a deal.

A search of the State of California’s Business Portal revealed that Clougherty Packaging, L.L.C., is a four-year-old Delaware corporation that shares the same business address as the one listed on the document above — 3049 E. Vernon Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90058-1800.

Hoover’s describes Clougherty Packaging as a company that processes pork products, including fresh-cut pork, prepared bacon, sausages, and boneless and bone-in cooked ham. In turn, those products are distributed through retailers under the Farmer John® brand name. The company was purchased by Austin, Minn.-based Hormel in 2004.

Still, how does one explain the fact that Clougherty Packaging appears to have been awarded such a contract?

Could it have been a payback for large campaign contributions? My search of the Federal Election Commission database shows that appears NOT to be the case, since the vast majority of contributions by individuals associated with Clougherty Packaging, Farmer John and Hormel during the past two years went to Republican candidates and causes.

It was 500,000 lbs. But still twice the retail price. Someone gots some splainin to do.

Depends on the quality of the product.

If it's to the food banks, it should be the cheapest available if anything at all...

"I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer." ~ Benjamin Franklin

It's giving them a fish vs teaching them to fish.
