Democracy @ Work...

I think there is a tendency for us in the west to assume that al Islamic countries and all Middle Eastern countries must be much the same - so that if something happens in one coutnry, it'll probably happen in another.

This is very human, but what happens in Spain does not often happen in Denmark, and what happens in Canada does not often happen in Honduras - the countries are distinctly difference and with clear cultural patterns.

I haven't been to Iran either (although will in a year or two), but understand that Iran has always been big on education, and that, as you say, Tehran was long cosmopolitan and perhaps more like Beirut than Baghdad.

So things change...but I suspect Tehran will be back some day. I can't see the peope tolerating extremism for ever. At some stage cracks will open up, and when the people in the Diaspora go back , they chang everything, as they have in Armenia and Israel.

We hope so, anyway.

Israel is or wants’ to be a Religious/Ethnic State to protect a "Jewish Homeland," that is: it will control citizenship and immigration based on that criteria.
Like Japan?

Yes! We agree like Japan! Two Ethno-Centric quasi Democracies that exclude foreigners from applying for Citizenship. The Western Idea of Democracy is based on Universal Rights of Man...i.e. Neither Israel or Japan subscribe to this notion and citizenship is proscribed by Ethnicity.

Take your Meds Rose...Can you tell us how many people in Israel have been granted Naturalization in the last 68 years? How many people have been granted citizenship by the enthnic Law of Return? I understand Israel's need for a Jewish State based on ethnicity. But Israel is far from being a Democracy often compared to America's by the ZioNista.. That is a sham!

Evidently "Palestinian" Jerusalemites in greater numbers are seeking and acquiring Israeli citizenship. The author and commentors speculate about why the reasons for the trend and why Israel is granting citizenship but none argue about its existence.

Quietly, East Jerusalem Palestinians Acquiring Israeli Citizenship

There has been a trend in recent years of Palestinian permanent residents of East Jerusalem applying for – and getting – Israeli citizenship. Will this trend provide freedom, or further fragment Palestinian national identity?

Hopefully, this will put the dream of a Palestine State to pasture.

Those in favor of the law, such as Ze'ev Boim, say it is aimed at preventing terrorist attacks and that "We have to maintain the state's democratic nature, but also its Jewish nature."[3]

Critics argue that the law is discriminatory because it disproportionately affects Israeli Arabs, since Israeli Arabs are far more likely to have spouses from the West Bank and Gaza Strip than other Israeli citizens.[5] Such critics have included the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which unanimously approved a resolution stating that the Israeli law violated an international human rights treaty against racism;[6] and Amnesty International, which has argued that "n its current form the law is discriminatory and violates fundamental principles of equality, human dignity, personal freedom and privacy, enshrined in the Basic Law: Human Dignity and Liberty, as well as the right of children to live with both parents, and other fundamental rights enshrined in international human rights treaties to which Israel is a party and which it is obliged to uphold." [7] When the law was renewed in June 2008, the publisher of the Israeli daily Ha'aretz argued that its existence makes Israel into an apartheid state.[1]

It doesn’t. But is anyone surprised?

Jews from the disputed “Palestinian” territories, as well as the Arab Jews, either fled or were expelled from the West Bank and Gaza and from Arab/moslem nations of the Middle East long before (and during) the current conflict surrounding the State of Israel. A large number of those Jews / Arab Jews and their descendents are in Israel.

If Arabs are permitted in Israel as citizens, will Jews in a Palestinian state be permitted to be citizens? It seems only just but how willing is Hamas going to be for that to happen?.

People always vote their Belly before their beliefs...the human and animal condition...they prosper...

I have on many occasions posted that perhaps a one State Confederation of Israel and Palestine rather than the two state solution...This way they could share Jerusalem and both peoples would be allowed to travel...it would be a start, and prosperity would replace the current enmity.

That's sweet, Princess, but just more of your deflection.
Some of those seeking and acquiring Israeli citizenship may indeed be voting their bellies but you still haven't disproven the fact that - in direct contradiction to your groundless opinion - "Palestinian" Jerusalemites are, in increasing numbers, seeking and acquiring Israeli citizenship.

Until the UN creates a law that affects ALL LANDS that have discriminatory citizenship rules------it cannot without engaging in gross hypocrisy ------impose on Israel Israel is a sovereign nation and has a RIGHT to determine its own demographics to the SAME extent that any other sovereign nation has Maldives has passed a law depriving any of its own citizens who ALREADY have citizenship from being citizens unless they are MUSLIMS anyone object?

The UN does not pass laws.

Many nations to have terribly discriminatory citizenship laws - Switzerland springs to mind - and in general I think these are feverishly debated domestically.

I have no problem with Israel maintaining a non-Muslim majority, but I would prefer it is honest about doing so. I also think Israel could allow limited right-of-return without any thrat to its demographics.

There goes the Sniffer accuses me of deflection while he always deflects when he has no answer like Pedo by projecting Homo-Erotic insults to retain his sanity with self- therapy...

Yeah ok ... that must make sense to you but to me it's just another deflection. Your conclusion - based as always on those voices in your pinhead - was factually refutted and all you could do was pout like a little girl. Pathetic yet soooo typical.

Israel has tried to be honest about it ... they want to be known as "a Jewish State" and limited RoR has been part of virtually every peace deal ever floated.
