A can of bear spray or wasp killer would have been less messy.

I was going to suggest Lysol spray ... they use ethanol as a propellent and dogs hate that ...

A friend overpacked his .58 muzzleloader, no shot or wadding, that poor dog ran piddling all the way home ...

Wasp spray shoots a long distance with a lot of pressure.
