Credit reform was a joke, HC reform a disaster, and wall street reform toothless.

Now what will the Republican Congress give us they get in?

President-elect Barack Obama asked President Bush today to request the release of the second $350 billion in federal bailout funds so he would have "ammunition" if the country's fragile economy weakened further.

The White House said that Bush has agreed to request the money.

Obama, speaking after a meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon, said it would be "irresponsible" to enter the White House without having asked Bush to request the funds. He called the cash "potential ammunition" in case the economy worsened.

The incoming president also signaled that he intends to "fundamentally change some of the practices" in the bailout program. Referring to how the first $350 billion of bailout cash was allocated, Obama said, "Many of us have been disappointed with the absence of clarity, the failure to track how the money's been spent."


Obama and Bush have teamed up to get the money released. Bush has agreed to request the funding, and Obama will lobby for it by arguing that he will "rebrand" the program and make better use of the money.

In a letter to congressional leaders, Obama's top economic adviser Larry Summers called the need for the second round of funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program is "imminent and urgent."

In his letter, Summers said the money would be used for a "sweeping effort" to save homeowners threatened with foreclosure, and make the money available to small banks and businesses along with corporate giants.

"I have talked to the president-elect about this subject," Bush said at his farewell news conference today.

"I told him if he needed the $350 billion on my watch, I'd be willing to ask for it.. if he felt like it needed to happen on my watch," Bush said.

A short time later, Obama asked Bush to make the request official.

"This morning, President-elect Obama asked President Bush to formally notify Congress, on his behalf, of his intent to exercise the authority... to access the last tranche of $350 billion in funding for Treasury programs addressing the financial crisis," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. "President Bush agreed to the President-elect's request."

The team tactic is one of several steps Obama is taking this week to prepare the way for his own administration, which officially begins next week

During former-Pres. George W. Bush’s tenure, 575 U.S. troops were killed in Afghanistan.

Since President Obama took office on Jan. 20, 2009, 580 U.S. troops have perished there (as of August 19).

In just 19 months, the Afghan war under Obama has claimed more U.S. lives than the previous administration’s entire 88-month quagmire.

That number does not include the exorbitant number of suicides, of which June 2010 brought the highest number in U.S. military history. In that single month alone, seven GIs killed themselves while deployed in Afghanistan or Iraq, along with dozens of others stateside.

That number also does not include the vastly inflamed number of GIs who are maimed, paralyzed, endure brain trauma and lose limbs. According to ABC news, in 2010, U.S. troops are being maimed at 12 times the rate they were in 2008.

These statistics are joined by the highest level of military spending in world history, and new reports that show 2010 to be the deadliest year for Afghan civilians as well as U.S./NATO troops.

This is the change in U.S. foreign policy we have gotten from the former “anti-war” presidential candidate that so many well-meaning people supported as a repudiation of the path taken by the Bush administration. That path had led to so much blood spilled, so many lives destroyed and so many resources squandere

Maybe you could detail what YOU would have done differently to restore the tens of millions of jobs lost during the eight years previous to Obamas administration. That is something I never see the NeoGOPers spell out. I know what Ike would have done but you johnnie come lately christian fundamentalist fuckwits never seem to offer up a better scenario...other than giving MORE money to those that need it the least. You probably weren't around when we enjoyed our greatest prosperity and the millionaires paid 90% on the money they made from the wealth they enjoyed. That was before the constant fear mongering and the lying that is all you asswhipes that stole my party are capable of.

Something you idiots never seem to get is by extracting the money supply from those that would use it to invent, innovate, produce, manufacture and support their local communities economies and allowing the super rich to invest in speculative markets with that money supply you have destroyed our economy and the future of our country.
