Chicago teachers to go on strike after talks with Rahm Emanuel fail

So far, the Progs have no response, they are waiting instruction from the Collective.

the unwashed liberal masses are busy watching their leaders squabble.....

the teacher union leaders know its members are the intelligentsia of the future "Party" and all "Party" members demand good pay....at least better than the unwashed masses....

Scary classrooms!
Sure are. Can you imagine sending your kid to a classroom to be taught by someone who decided $59,000 wasn't good enough for an annual stipend in this economy where we have a president who just ousted tens of thousands from private enterprise jobs?

What's he trying to pull?

Don't teachers do math any more? Their district in Chicago is already $600 million in the hole. They should be volunteering for pay cuts to make sure the system doesn't go bankrupt.

What a bunch of piggies at the trough. While misfortune looms for the area, teachers want to enjoy wealth while others hit rock bottom.

:eusa_silenced:And what will they be fighting for next? EARLY RETIREMENT.

What it has boiled down to is that Emanuel has promised them an outstanding payraise for reviews based on their performance. Either you cut it or you don't. Let's get rid of poor performing teachers. Is that too much to ask for?

Sounds like the teachers know that if raises are based on performance 6,000 teachers are too poorly performing to keep their jobs. I saw one with a sign that said "Stop war, pay teachers" so it's obvious that this teacher is too stupid to teach a class.

The city has a 700 million dollar deficit. The teachers should be glad they have a job at all. Let Chicago go. Let the teachers go on strike, let the police go on strike. Just let the whole city fail.

The deficit is because of Bush

Perhaps you are being sarcastic, but the city deficit has nothing to do with Bush.

Evidently it is.

I love it, these people require a raise every year, unlimited job protection, highway robbery amazingly high Pensions, free healthcare, and a shorter workday (remember they go from 8:30-3:00), while they have some of the worst students, graduation rate, LITERACY RATE, not only in the state, but in the entire country.

Every big city has the same liberal philosophies destroying the schools systems. Did you know in Cook County the amazing larger than what is reported schools budget come almost entirely from property taxes (top 5 highest in the country), of the amount earmarked for education 60% goes to RETIRED TEACHER PENSION PAYOUTS!!!!

60% (more than HALF) of the education budget doesn't go to teachers! The private sector doesn't get pensions anymore because they are unsustainable, but public sector employees should get BLOATED, UNFUNDED, TAX-PAYOR PAID FOR, pension plans?

If that 60% actually went to education, then we would see real change in Chicago and every big city school system. There would be a lower teacher to student ratio, more resources, more security, more programs, more schools, etc. Yet Public Teacher Unions say they are about the children! LOL they are SOLELY about the TEACHERS and they give a CRAP about the students!

Rahm should stand his crowd and institute the largest stag/replacement-teacher effort in Chicago history, then offer teachers this:
(1) No more tenure - You are at will.
(2) Pay increase and promotions are based on MERIT ONLY (with length of service a consideration not a determining factor).
(3) No more group pensions. It gets switched over to individual plans (401k and IRA) with an employer match.
(4) No more free healthcare, teachers shall contribute the equivalent of the private sector.

Sign on the dotted line or you will be replaced!!!

Wow! These are the striking Marxists called Chicago Teachers

What a crew

:eusa_drool:True. Maybe if they would dedicate going on a diet for just 3 months they wouldn't need that increase in pay.

A private sector pension model can work, but it has to be run by the union that employs the people. In construction the unions get direct payments per hour worked to go into the pension fund. The trade union then runs the pension fund itself. If there is a shortfall, it has to be made up by the union, or later when the union negotiates new rates. It is not the automatic "the taxpayers pay" you get with the public unions.

If you go to a true union run health and benefit plan you can make it work, because then the union would have a stake in making sure the plan stays solvent, not like now where the if there is a shortfall they do not worry, because uncle taxpayer will always pick up the bill.

Communists took over the Unions and that's how they intend to turn every American city into Detroit and Newark

Chicago teachers to go on strike after talks with Rahm Emanuel fail

1. Chicago teachers strike with an impasse against Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago.

2. The school district was facing a $700 million deficit.

3. The latest offer has been a 16% raise and an evaluation tied to student standardized test scores, but teachers aren’t having any part of it. They say that would cost 6,000 teacher jobs.

Read more: Chicago teachers to go on strike after talks with district fail | Fox News

Who these days is seeing a 16% raise? Teachers have to be accountable for their performance, but the devil is in the details. Scores should only count from spring to spring scores, (No pre and post scores) and only students without attendance problems should be included in the evaluation. It should be on growth of performance and not meeting the standards of the grade. (one month growth for each month in school would be considered average)

First of all to answer your question about who receives a 16% pay raise, you really should do some research before coming up with a one liner. When you ask a question like that, and make it sound like all of a sudden teachers want a 16% pay raise, most everyone would think the teacher's are out of their minds. But this of course is not the case. Last year because of a major shortfall, teachers raises were rescinded meaning they did not get not receive their pay increase. This 16% pay increase is to take place over the next four years and includes making up for the raise that was rescinded last year. In other words, it's a pay raise that covers five years, and since it is the total of accumulated pay raises, each year is not that much.

SALARIES: The Chicago School Board rescinded a scheduled 4 percent pay raise for teachers last year because of its budget problems. It offered teachers a pay increase of 2 percent a year over four years, which is what it assumed in the 2013 budget, then raised the first year to 3 percent on Sunday, amounting to what CPS said was a 16 percent raise of the 4-year contract.
The union wants the rescinded raise restored plus annual increases higher than those offered by the city.

Factbox: Chicago teachers dispute is over school reform, money - Yahoo! News

If you understand what is said here, it isn't even a 16% pay increase but rather fuzzy math. Now what the city can afford may prove to be a problem for the teachers and the union. My point here is that those who are anti-union constantly do this, trying to make a statement about how unions ask for the moon and this is why they are so bad. As we can see here, the actual pay raise being offered in the contract is under 3% per year which must also cover inflation, so basically the teachers are just trying to keep the pay they now have. It's not an increase as much as it is a cost of living adjustment, yet you throw out the 16% number in a way that makes everyone think these teachers must be out of their minds, when in fact they just want a cost of living increase.

1) Okay
2) Average salary increase $2,000 every other year, up to $10,000 every other year for top performing teachers (making way above average growth with 70% of the class); steps ion between for better performing teachers
3) okay
4) Health care with teachers contributing 20% of the cost; prescription plans
5) Teachers not making growth standards for three years in a row are summarily dismissed.
6) Right to Work City
