Hah, I knew it was just a matter of time some overly PC pukes started pissing and whining about the Redskins name. I remember going to Cleveland once when I was a kid and seeing American Indians protesting outside Jacobs Field about the Cleveland Indians name. Seriously people, shut the fuck up and get over it already. Find something actually important and fulfilling to occupy your time.

My last name starts with Mc, but the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame never offended me. Guess I'm not spineless enough.

Challenge to Washington Redskins team name begins at trademark hearing - ESPN

They've tried this before.........................

And yeah...............I think there are a lot better things Congress can do with it's time.

It seems like a much more real possibility this time around than the last few years that the name will be changed. It's ridiculous. Redskin is a name that players aspire to do justice and that fans are proud of. The protesters really do need to find something better to do with their time.

When the NCAA extorted UND into doing away with the Fighting Sioux, the Sioux tribes of ND actually spoke up and wanted it to stay. That's the problem with these politically correct boobs. It's not about making sure nobody gets offended, it's about their own gutless guilt.

You know...............the Redskins have had their team name since 1932. Since then, they've built a successful team, and when I think of the term "redskin", the Native American slur isn't the first thing to come to mind, it's the football team.

Now.................if a new NFL team formed and they wanted to call themselves a racial slur, I'd say that no, they have to find a better name since they are forming up in an age where people are sensitive to those kind of things.

But, since Washington has had the name for over 80 years, I'd say that they've established firmly that they are a football team and not a veiled way to pass racial slurs.

Besides.............they were originally called the Braves, and when the franchise moved, they changed it to Redskins. I don't think it had anything to do with racism, I think it was more a homage to the noble Native American.

You're right Redskin is not a racial slur. Racial slurs degrade a specific population. Redskin is a term said with respect for a feared warrior. The vast majority of the Native American population in/around D.C. has no problem with the name. That's a commonly talked about point around here. The trouble comes from tribes not of this area.

It's also worth pointing out that the Indians who inhabited the area used to wear a red lotion to repel mosquitoes and eventually gave their skins a reddish hue. Virtually none of the local native Americans descended from those people are behind any effort to change the name. All outsiders.

And the change from "Braves" had something to do with a copyright. I forgot which team they changed it because of.

Exactly the reason that I don't really like PC people, because they are always looking for a way to get offended, and will use any excuse to try to offend others as well.

Matter of fact, I'm still pissed that some idots re-wrote Mark Twain's books by getting rid of the word "******". It's appropriate languate for the time, and that is how people actually talked and thought about others.

Might as well re-write and heavily edit the Bible while you're at it..................

Oh wait................that's been done several times as well.

My mother was a Cherokee, and I think that the protests about the names of these sports teams is ridiculous. It shows how insensitive that Whites can be, but let the names stand so that everyone can witness this.

How about the Washington Wops? I'm sure there are some Italian players on the team . .

Just kidding! I'm a liberal, and we're supposed to be in favor of PC stuff and I am, to a certain extent. But not when it comes to team mascots or team names. Mascots are picked for their known qualities of bravery and fighting ability. Hence, Lions, Bears, etc.
It is not an insult to name a team mascot after something - in fact, it is a compliment.

For decades, the Stanford mascot was the Indian. Why? Indians were known for their bravery and fighting ability. Notre Dame's mascot to this day? The Irish. The FIGHTING Irish. You bet your ass! I'm Irish, and if they ever try to take that one down, someone's going to hear from me.

Stanford "Cardinal" - it isn't even "Cardinals" as in the feisty bird. Even that might have been halfway acceptable. But "Cardinal" (singular, as in the color red)? Give me a BREAK. I wonder if real American Indians are offended by being the mascot of the Washington professional football team. I'm betting not too many are. Memo to folks trying to change the Washington Redskins team name: Get lost.

Here's an interesting one: Remember the Washington Senators baseball team? Now THERE's an exception to what I was talking about with mascots being known for their bravery and fighting ability . . . . .

I agree with you, with this comment. I think the test is not whether you or I are offended but, rather, whether a significant number of members of the ethnic group in question are offended. In my previous post, I postulated that probably not too many American Indians are offended by the team name, "Washington Redskins." I don't know - maybe I'm wrong.

But when it comes to the N word, I suspect the vast majority of black people in today's world would be highly offended by the use of the word, even when it comes to us in a book written back when the word was acceptable in polite society.

Just my two cents. Go Skins!!!!

Quick question.............................

Do you think that in the gambling casinos on the Native American reservations, do they ban bets on names like "Redskin", "Brave", "Seminoles", or any other name?

I'm pretty sure the casino would be happy to cover bets for those who carried names like that.
