Can you 'fess up to your party's warts, can you dare?

I have never been affiliated with a political party.

I find it next to impossible to trust politicians of any stripe. While I know that some must truly want to do what is best for the country, I think too many are corrupt, beholden to whatever groups paid to help them gain office, whoever may have dirt on them they don't wish exposed, etc. It isn't just US politics that brings me to this opinion, I think it's been the way of politics through most of history.

Anyway, for the specific parties : my issues have probably mostly been discussed. The Dems and Repubs both spend way too much, if on somewhat different things. The D's are too intrusive when it comes to things like health, the R's are too intrusive with relationships. Both major parties spend too much time talking about wedge issues such as abortion, creationism in science classes, etc. without actually doing anything about them. I don't like the religious right, the fundamentalist types...but neither do I like the hardcore environmentalists of the left. Neither side seems willing to discuss real solutions to our over spending. I believe that is because neither side wants to do anything that might push away potential voters by ending entitlement programs for individuals or businesses.

The Libertarians have some good ideas, but I find them to be too idealistic and unrealistic about the effect some of their policies may have. They seem to look at the way they think the world should be rather than how things are. Government DOES have legitimate uses in places they seem to think it should be abandoned, such as education. The foreign policy ideas, completely removing the US military presence around the world, to me is also unrealistic. It may be unfortunate, but we are tied to other nations in many ways and sometimes that may necessitate a show of force. I think we are involved in far too much conflict at the moment, but the idea of shutting down every foreign base and becoming isolationist, even if only in purely military terms, is not a good idea IMO. I might be more willing to look at the LP if they seemed more geared toward gradual change, I suppose.

As to the question of whether we are already in a one party system....I am not sure. Certainly the two major parties are very similar in too many ways (if you ignore the rhetoric), but while the presidency is always one of the two, there is still at least a little independent/third party representation in congress and at the state and local levels. Too much does flow through the major parties for my taste, though. I don't think we get a lot of real choice when D or R are the only ones with a chance.

I am a party of one. I vote my conscience. Fuck the rest.

I have faith in the nation; I see no dictator among ANY of the candidates. I may despise Newt & Sancto, but don't see them as evil.

The OP asked for people to dish negative on the party that they belong to. You belong to the Democratic party AND the GOP?

I belong to neither. Which of us has responded more appropriately?
Yup. I was sort of hoping the indies would dish on both.

Go for it!

And, I'll add to mine that I don't like the anti-choice stance. Seems very contrary to libertarian ideals the GOP once had (Goldwater, for example).

I agree.....its not my business if a woman wants and abortion or not even though I am personally against the practice because I consider it murder.

I doubt anyone is 100% pleased with their party - Republican or Democratic. I doubt anyone is 100% pleased with the views of the side of their political spectrum, either - left or right.

Can you vocalize/post what the views or platforms of your party's/group's you find difficult to stomach and why? And, if so, why not switch sides? And, if not, what do you view of the other side that is worse? Just generalities - and it doesn't matter if they are reality, but it is more important that it is YOUR reality.

For me, I'm registered Republican. I can just barely stomach the religious right. I find them too authoritarian and am opposed to any legislation of morality. I can stomach them more because I believe the Constitution will prevail in protecting us all from theocracy.

The Democrats are OK, but I find they are too loose with money, too willing to fund entitlements when we have more than enough, and now, too many socialist tendencies. In two words: too nanny.

the problem is in allowing people who think just like them or who are beholden to them to pick judges.

they've already infected the courts...

and i say that as someone who thinks the far left of my party has far too much sympathy for palestinian terrorists. but i guess the difference is that so does the extreme right.

That's a really good point. When we look at the extremes of each party, are they all that different?

I've been a Democrat all of my life. I appreciate the normalization of rights for all peoples and orientations. I don't think gays should get special rights like hate crime protections and that sort, but they should be able to marry whoever they wish. The CONUS says we are granted "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness", the ability to marry whoever you wish (so long as they are of legal age) is covered by that.

Regarding hate crimes legislation...is it only the gays you object to getting it? Hate crime protections have existed for many, many, MANY years and yet we only hear about it when someone wants to add "they gheys" to already existing protections.

Harry Browne famously said; "Your right to swing your arm ends at the tip of my nose."

You right over your body ends at pulling the arms and legs off of another body.

If President Obama needed to temporarily suspend the constitution, just to get things back on track and make life fair for everyone, you would support him, wouldn't you?
