bridge tonnage signs?

I see bridge tonnage signs over bridges.......these are the bridges that are not truss or suspension type....they cross somewhat narrow rivers/ditches/etc ........they do not alter the shape of the highway
.....and the signs are posted very close to the bridge
...once a trucker sees the sign, seems like a he would have to slam on the brakes--and even then, might not stop in time if he is over tonnage
.....why are the signs not posted farther away from the ''bridges''?
any truckers out there??
 
There is supposed to be an advisory sign posted before the bridge.
Although, that might be if there is an actual turn around spot..
You would be suprised by the number of towns, cities and counties that dont follow MUTCD guidelines.
