Breaking: U.S. declines to veto U.N. Security Council resolution for Israel to stop ....

U.S. would be breaking international law if it recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Wow! That sounds serious.
What will be the punishment for breaking that "law"?

Well, it makes it extremely difficult for the U.S. to impose international law on other nations.

So no punishment?

The punishment is a reduction in influence. For example, China might decide to lift sanctions on North Korea claiming that the U.S. does not observe international law, so why should they? Or if the World Court calls out China for the building of the islands in the South China Sea, the Chinese might say screw you, if the U.S. doesn't follow international law, why should we. Get it?

Well, it makes it extremely difficult for the U.S. to impose international law on other nations.

If we want to, and have the ability to, we'll impose. And if we don't, we won't. So what?

For example, China might decide to lift sanctions on North Korea claiming that the U.S. does not observe international law, so why should they?

And if the US does observe "international law" and China still misbehaves? How do we force China?

Thanks for admitting this "law" which isn't a law, has no punishment if it's broken.
Has no enforcement mechanism and is just another Muslim temper tantrum.

Thanks for exposing the fact that you don't know what you are talking about. UNSC Resolutions have the force of law. That is just a fact.

UNSC Resolutions have the force of law.

Scary!
So if we recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, we'll be fined/jailed/executed?
Or nothing?

When there was talk of a two state solution to Israel/Palestine, it was said that the Palestinians would have their capital in East Jerusalem.

Jerusalem was never the capital of any Arab country nor does it have any real significance in Islam

In fact, we need a Crusade to evict all non-believers from the place, Jews and Muslims. That would solve the problem.

You need a crusade?
Vatican, the Waqf, Druze, Samaritans already own their places in Jerusalem, Israel and Gaza...even the Russians!
It's the Jews You're declaring misfit IN JERUSALEM, in ZION, in JUDEA.

Yes, Jerusalem should be 100% Christian. We have the power, why should we allow non-believers to have any authority in Jerusalem? Why do we need to be fair or accommodating? Throw out the troublemakers. Deus Vult.
Jews owned Jerusalem long before Christians took it in the dark ages. Hell Muslims have a better claim to the city then Christians they controlled it longer then Christians. Well after they took it in a war.
Having "control" of a city does not confer ownership. Danzig was controlled by the Third Reich from 1939 to 1945 but being claimed as German territory by the Germans did not make it so.

Israel is a rogue scofflaw state. This resolution accuses Israel's settlement building in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem as a flagrant violation of international law. The whole world knew this already but the United States' refusal to give political cover to Israel is significant because until now, the annual UN Security Council resolutions backing a two-state solution have been vetoed by the U.S. and internationally this is seen as a rebuke by the Americans of the Israeli occupation.
Anger as US abstains while UN resolution condemns 'illegal' Israeli settlements - Independent.ie
Israel's longstanding and only ally is allowing the U.N. Security Council to go on record with a vote of 14-0 in finding fault with Israel. This is good news in the season of peace to those of goodwill.

Building in their own capital violates an international law? That's hilarious!
No country on Earth recognizes East Jerusalem as part of Israel.

YET, once they do what the arab muslims do and start making threats the UN will recognise Israel's right to all of Jerusalem. Then they will tell the arab muslims to pack their bags and go home.

No country recognised Jordans right to Jerusalem but they still owned it

If that was so the arab muslims would be all in prison by now. Many UNSC resolutions are just recommendations and not backed by any laws

So the arab muslims claiming that the mandate of Palestine is theirs does not make it so, and international law of 1923 then must come into force

UN resolutions mean virtually zip, and Obama's opinions are about to be rendered even more irrelevent.

Our relationship - particularly the financial relationship - with that tired, useless organization will be reconsidered by summer.
I'm always amused that Israeli supporters cite the UN as giving Israel the legal right to exist in the first place, and then immediately after that say anything that the UN does or says is irrelevant.

Israel didn't really need the UN to tell them that at the time. But isn't even funnier how the anti-Israeli folks like to use the UN against Israel all the time, even though it was the UN who "made" them a state.

The UN should not be in the business of infringing on other countries sovereignty, most of which are democratically elected by the people of that country. And yes it is a waste of tax payer money going to the UN, so unelected politicians from differing countries can try to tell us what to do. It's a progressive brain child, that acts on the line of thinking that they know what's best for everyone...in its best of intentions.

The UN is like the EU an extremist left wing organisation that has gained control of the world. Time to get control back and chase the extremist left wing to the M.E. to fight the wars they have started

Betcha they will.
There is no country on Earth (with the exception of Palau) that will recognize East Jerusalem as part of Israel.

Nor will they recognise it as part of Palestine making this a paper exercise with no outcome. It has just set back any chance of peace and a two state solution by 100 years

What would East Jerusalem be part of then? Very soon there won't be a West Bank or Gaza strip. True story.

Watch the noose tighten as Israel enforces international law on the west bank, then the arab muslims will be crying for the UN to revoke the resolution

As far as I know UN resolutions don't have any force of law.
They're just some kind of advice to the member States.
They're not like European Union directives or regulations :)

There already is a two state solution and the arab muslims capital is in Amman. Look at the mandate of Palestine that became international law

It amazes me to see how much the nations care about Jerusalem and it's surrounding area. The timing and the positions on the chessboard make it even more interesting.

Undoubtedly many Jews around the world have much on their minds and hearts, blessing the 1st Hanuka candle with their families and friends, Jerusalem is being the CENTER of attention this week.
I would put it differently in that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land is the center of attention this week.

And yet there is no legal treaty that ever gave them this land, they stole it from its rightfull owners and so should be the ones facing UN resolutions

The US will very shortly and also will recognize it as part of Israel's capital.

Naw, don't believe the hype. With the resolution now passed, the U.S. would be breaking international law if it recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The U.S. won't do that, even with Trump.

What international law is that as this is just a recommendation and has no power

There is no Palestinian land. Palestine doesn't exist.

The UN Resolution that just passed, makes your propaganda obsolete.

No propaganda just facts as there is no treaty that states this land is for the Palestinian state. And the resolution is just a recommendation with no legal powers

Correct, but monte still believes that every resolution against Israel is an international law

There will never be a "two-state solution", nor peace until all third parties back out of the region and let the principal players fight to the finish.

There is no "Palestinian land", as there is no "nation of Palestine" and never has been.
