The attack took place yesterday in the city of Charleroi, and left a female and male police officer injured.

Belgium prosecutors have said the knifeman was Algerian with a criminal record.

They identified the attacker only by the initials K.B. and said he had lived in Belgium since 2012.

The prosecutors say the knifeman, who shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the attack on Saturday, may have been inspired by terrorism.

He was shot by police and died of his injuries during the attack on two police officers in Charleroi by a third officer.

The machete-wielding attacker was carrying a rucksack but no explosives or other weapons were found.

In a statement prosecutors said: "There are indications that the attack may have been inspired by a terrorist motive.

"He is known to police for criminal acts, not for terrorism."

Prosecutors searched two houses in Charleroi after the attack but did not provide details.

Early on Sunday Belgian police arrested a man with a machete in the eastern city of Liege.

Broadcaster VRT said Liege police had cordoned off an area before detaining the man.

It said the man was of Turkish origin, did not use the machete and was not previously known to the police.

The attacker slashed two officers after turning up at a police station in Charleroi, Belgium, on Saturday, lunging at them and hacking at their heads.

The man reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the assault - which has now been claimed by Islamic State (ISIS).

But it has since emerged Belgian authorities issued two separate deportation orders against the man, who entered the country illegally in 2012.
