Breaking: Judge temporarily blocks Wisconsin union law

Let the system go broke and let the teachers find employment else where. The nation is going broke, the states are going broke, either we all suck it up or we simply let it go. We American's let government have the cookie jar unattended, we made our own bed. Either stand up and fix it or say screw it.
No it isn't, it's just a recession not the end of the world. Quit whining.

Recessions tend to make us more acutely aware of billions of dollars spent for below mediocre performance by powerful unions, that is where the "whining" generally comes from, unfortunately. When we are flush with cash, we don't worry so much about budget as a rule. Maybe private education could expand and we could move back to the top 20 internationally in education? Either way, anyone would begin to question the expense when the capital runs low. Well, anyone who pays their bills...

Judge temporarily blocks Wisconsin union law

MADISON, Wisconsin — A judge has issued a temporary restraining order blocking Wisconsin's new and contentious collective bargaining law from taking effect.

Ozanne filed a lawsuit contending that a legislative committee that broke a stalemate that had kept the law in limbo for weeks met without the 24-hour notice required by the Midwestern state's open meetings law.
The Republican-controlled Legislature passed the measure and Gov. Scott Walker signed it last week.

I don't know what difference this is going to make in the end, as even if they gave a 24 hour notice and got the awol Democrat legislators to come back, all they needed was one ""present" to pass this bill. This will change nothing, all this is doing is costing the tax payers more money.

Actually that's not quite correct. You are mixing two bills (well one bill but at two different points in time) as it pertains content. The original bill included spending authorization and as such was considered a budget bill. For that bill the legislature needed a quorum to act. When the Democrats left, it left the legislature without a quorum and the bill stalled.

The GOP on March 9th, stripped the spending aspect from the bill transforming it from a budget bill to a statutory bill, such a bill only require a majority vote of those present. However from a procedural point the legislature may have made a mistake in completing the action in a single night, violating the 24-hour open meeting law (possibly) giving the Democrats a chance to delay implementation through the courts.

Where we go from here:

1. The GOP should introduce the following measures: (a) a bill to repeal the bill they just past [this renders the court case moot.], and (b) introduce a new bill doing the same thing but insuring that sufficient notice is provided. Since the GOP is in the majority, it should not be a problem to pass the newer bill.

2. From a Democrat perspective, in my personal opinion, they are trying to stall implementation of the law until the June/July time frame. They are working hard at getting the necessary signatures for the recall of Republicans and if I understand correctly - once the signatures are obtained the recall elections could happen this summer. I think thier intent is to stall the bill in the courts until they can see if they can unseat enough Republicans to change the majority party.
