AVATAR = Awesome!

Just got back, and let me just say this: BEST MOVIE IN A LONG FUCKING TIME.

I went in with expectations of a beautiful movie with a decent story. I came out mesmerized by the story more than the graphics. Seriously, the graphics are truly amazing, and I was constantly awed at how beautifully Cameron had painted the world of Pandora. But even more amazing was the story, really. Without spoiling anything, I can't even begin to describe what was so great about that.

It should be a shoe-in for Best Picture, because I've seen a lot of the other possible nominees. They don't hold a candle to this.

Also, I almost walked out of the theater and got in line for another ticket.

I'm going to see it again tomorrow. Probably won't see it in 3D again. I honestly don't know what the 3D added to the film.

Oh good, I was wondering, because I don't do 3-D unless I absolutely have to. It gives me a headache.

I'm excited about seeing it.

You are in for quite a right, I assure you. I won't say that the story is original, because you will definitely feel like you've heard the story before. I won't spoil it by comparing it to other films, but you'll know which I'm talking about after you see it.

BUT, the story is still incredibly well-told. The voice acting, especially by Zoe Seldana, is incredible. Usually voice acting lacks emotion, but not here.

Anyway, I have no doubt you'll enjoy yourself. Cameron makes you feel as if you're there on Pandora, and you really connect with the characters. And there's so many elements to the story, it's hard not to connect with it.

I want to see this movie, because I think I can empathize, I was stationed in Puerto Rico once and I met a Pandora’s Box that led this pagan into a Catholic marriage.

Now that I'm thinking about, maybe seeing it in 3D once is a good idea. It's not eye-popping 3D like you see in A Christmas Carol, Beowulf, or other gimmicky movies. Cameron used 3D to create an environment that seems real. There aren't many scenes where it feels like things are flying off the screen at you. Instead, the entire movie feels like an actual environment. For instance, when they are in the forest and there are insects flying around, some appear to be in the background, while others appear to be floating closer to you. Like I said, it's not meant to make you go "Whoa!" every time an object flies towards the screen. Instead, it's supposed to make you feel as if you are ON Pandora, and it does do that.

I saw it and thought it was great! I took the 3d glasses off for a few seconds to see if they really had much of an effect; they did. Seeing it in 3d is totally worth the extra money and you adapt to the glasses fairly quickly.

I went to see Avatar yesterday. I was totally impressed with the 3-D effects, but the story was weaker than a warm watered down beer. Cameron creates a beautiful world and the technical aspects of the movie are killer. But the story is so so weak that within 10 minutes I knew exactly how the story would resolve. I even predicted that the "bad" Seargent would be killed by an arrow through his heart. Weak.

Sadly, it wasn't hard to see where the movie would go because it follows a strict Hollywood liberal formula: The "hero" is human, in liberal minds, all humans are evil. When the evil human is allowed to experience the Beautiful and Natural world of Pandora and it's tree loving socialist people; he sees that he is indeed evil and decides to turn against the evil humans that are trying to exploit beautiful Pandora for it's "unobtainium". Unobtanium is a valuable commodity worth $20 million per Kilo. The Evil humans are there solely at the whim of their evil corporate masters and will stop at nothing to get "unobtainium", even if they have to destroy the beautiful and loving Pandorans and Pandora itself. They will stop at nothing to get "unobtainium"!! The share holders demand it!!!

So here it is :
Bad guys = Evil corporations, evil humans, capitalists
Good guys = the caring loving socialist Pandoran's who love (literally!!) trees, and the liberal humans who see the evil things the evil humans are doing.

Bottom line- The gentle and good tree lovers of Pandora teach the Hero their ways. He falls in love with the girl, sees the evil in his evil corporate masters, rallies the Pandorans to defeat the evil humans and their evil corporate masters. He kills the evil humans and kicks the evil humans off the planet in the end. The main bad guy - "Seargant Pure Evil" - gets shot with an arrow through his heart by the loving and innocent Pandoran that the hero has fallen in love with as she saves his life.

TADA!!!! Evil loses!!! Peace, Love, tree hugging, and Understanding wins!!!

Trite, unimpressive, simple minded story for children. Other than that, it was great. :)

You didn't predict it. It was foreshadowed. That's just good story-telling. There were a lot of foreshadowing techniques used in the story. They are MEANT for you to foresee the end.

Sometimes, it's okay for the good guys to win, you know?

Besides, Avatar is the first in a trilogy. The war is far from over.

Disagree completely. Was the story original? Not at all. But what stories are these days? Was the story well told? 100% yes. The characters are developed. The story progresses as a good rate, without a lot of filler scenes. And the images used in some of the scenes are absolutely breath-taking.

Anyway. You can hate on the story as you wish. I think your critique is far off-base. It's one of the best stories in a fantasy/sci-fi movie in years. Hell, it's better than the stories in most of the pretentious indy films that have come out recently.

In spite of a somewhat predictable plot, the story keeps you guessing and the graphics are truly stunning. I saw it in 3-D; I want to see it in 'regular' too on the big screen. Definitely worth the price of admission.

Eh, I will wait for a month and see it on Netlix.

You realize the Avatar you watch on TV and this movie by James Cameron are completely unrelated? They ARE making an Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, but this one ain't it.

I have tickets to see it at 6:50 tonight in 3D. I'm pretty stoked.

I watched the trailer. It's not straight-across, and I get that "Avatar" is referring to his "avatar" but the characters look the same, the animals are similar, I think even the planet name is the same.

Errr...how do the characters look the same? The Last Airbender has Asian characters, and Avatar stars American marines and aliens.

Anyway, I assure you, they are not at all similar.

Here's the show you are looking for:
IMDb Video: The Last Airbender -- U.S. Teaser Trailer

But they do look alike, in passing anyway. Look at the blue arrow thing on the faces/forehead of the main characters' faces.

Trite movies are often the best, as the best stories are told and retold in a variety of ways.

You are entitled to your opinion. I disagree. I thought the "story" sucked. It was loaded with oversimplified political jabs to boot. There were some cool things about the movie.
3-D effects - awesome, just awesome.
CG effects - very well done. Created a visually stunning world. Loved the flying dragons!
Story - watered down recycled CRAP.

Not at all. Recycled? Yes. It's been done before. But this movie does it just as good as, if not better than, other movies that have done it before.

Like I said, most stories in movies these days are recycled. At least it wasn't another comic book, TV show, sequel, or book-to-movie adaptation.

You'll be waiting several months. 4-5 at least.

I thought the same thing about Star Trek. It didnt take that long on netflix.
