Detroit's automakers each gained market share in 2011 for the first time since 1988 as the overall automotive industry finished the year by selling the most cars and trucks since 2008.

Total industry sales for the year topped an estimated 12.78 million, according to Autodata, a 10.3% increase from 2010.

The industry's strong December -- along with an improving U.S. economy -- is giving automakers confidence that the trend will continue in 2012.

"Industry sales are up now over 20% over the two years since the throes of the financial crisis," said Ellen Hughes-Cromwick, Ford's chief economist, who predicted total industry sales will increase to between 13.2 million and 14.2 million in 2012.

I was to understand that increased consumption of fossil fuels and emission of greenhouse gases was a bad thing. :dunno:

Funny how this news is spin in and of itself.
Sales were at historic lows in 2009. Of course sales had no where to go but up.
Car dealers shut down by government pressures brought to bear on auto companies. Tens of thousands of people put out of work.
This also goes to show that the economy always fixes itself.
Of course the liberals and Obamatons will give their Messiah ALL the credit. Sheesh.
Such blind loyalty and the inability to admit their elective selection in 2008 was DEAD WRONG.

This is funny. Could you guys make up your minds? Cons dismissing growth in auto sales. Increased auto sales means more cars are manufactured, which means more jobs, which means more money in people's pockets, which means more money is being spent on goods and services - all of which is good for the economy. You know, the economy - the single most important issue to the vast majority of Americans. But now it's bad or insignificant simply because Obama is the POTUS. Of course, we all know what you hacks would be saying if auto sales slumped.

Any kind of good economic news is the last thing the petty assholes want to hear.

A growing number of auto sales is a GOOD thing.
You people want to heap praise all over Obama for the rise in sales.
His policies have ZERO to do with it.
