Santa Monica has hosted nativity scenes in Palisades Park for 60 years. Beginning in 1953, a coalition of 13 churches joined a local police organization to put up nativity displays. The displays consisted of more than a dozen scenes from the birth of Jesus as depicted in the Gospels created out of sets and using mannequins dressed in period costumes.

But in the last few years atheist groups have challenged the practice and demanded space for their own displays. Last year, the display area was divided up into small display spaces and split up among dozens of applicants. The coalition of churches which had been using the park got just three of the spaces, meaning the majority of their display remained in storage. One space went to a Jewish group and two to other churches. Eighteen of the spaces went to atheists groups.

Now Santa Monica has simply put an end to the displays altogether. .

No "War on Christmas"?

The problem is that Christians object to Atheist Displays

If one has the privilege, then all must get it. Or take the privilege away from everyone.

Serves them all right.

Let's give Christmas back to Santa where it belongs!

No the problem is simply the intolerance of atheist groups.

So let me get this straight....the city had been allowing ONLY Christian displays. When forced to actually follow the 1st Ammendment and allow all religious beliefs, they did so, and have now decided that because they don't want a particular viewpoint to be allowed to be expressed, they have cancelled all displays.

And your objection is that should specifically endorse and allow only Christian beliefs? Really?

The problem is that Christians object to Atheist Displays

No the problem is simply the intolerance of atheist groups.

What intolerance? The athiest groups weren't demanding no Christian displays at all, they just objected to Unconstitutional special preference to Christians. It's the Christians who first would not allow Atheist displays, and then cancelled all rather than allowing any atheist displays.

It must really hurt those atheists that it's still called Christmas.

No more than it hurts Christians that the days of the week are named after Pagan gods.

Then why are they so intolerant of Christmas displays?

They're not. They're opposed to the Unconstitutional government support of ONLY Christian (or any other religious/anti-rlegious) displays. The intolerance was in not allowing ANY displays rather than letting Atheists have displays. Show me where Atheists asked for only Atheist displays. The Christians were asking for only Christian displays.

Too bad the Santa Monica city government didn't become pluralists and ask for all religions to help form displays around the time of their holidays.

Of course, Atheists don't really have a holiday. So I guess they would have to select a day from the calender to celebrate Atheism, huh?

Could save Christmas while promoting understanding of differing beliefs through displays for Hannakah And Ramadan. Maybe I should write the Santa Monica government in concerning this issue.

Read much? Jewish and atheist displays were welcomed. But the haters splintered into 18 groups and left the space vacant just so no one else could use it. They prefer ugly to festive. They won. Hate triumphed.
