I read a book about the life of the chief commander of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

He was the son of a shop keeper who was an absolute disciplinarian.

When he worked at a factory assembly line, his task was easier than the guy behind him, so he endangered the employment of half of his coworkers and got himself fired by the union. Interestingly, he felt sorry and stressed that he had to endanger his colleagues, yet he didn't stop.

When he was malnourished and fainted at loading the concrete mixer at his construction job, he told off his supervisor for being human and switching off the machine till he regained his strength.

Then when we was the camp boss and his wife asked him whether he would gas his own children too, he said yes, even though he meant no, and his wife left him.

So, are people captains of their souls, or is the soul programmed by other people that we are forced to follow?
