Everybody can't be the top. And no, not "every nationality" sparked the Atlantic slave trade.

The poster is correct; the Portuguese brought lots of African slaves to Brazil back to the 16th century, and the first ones brought here to North America, in what is now South Carolina (1530s), were brought by Spanish merchants They were quickly followed by French, Dutch and English flesh merchants.

Happily the South Carolina group overthrew their captors, escaped and went to live and interbreed with the Native Americans.
If only it had ended there.

Of course THE first Atlantic slave trader was good ol' Chris Columbus, who took some aren't-they-quaint Native Americans back to Europe as a kind of trophy.
