I'll echo Corey Booker and raise you a Jon Huntsman.
In other words, principled fair people who are not political whores.
I agree, thanks for reminding me about Huntsman, he's another politician I like.

I like anybody who can demonstrate that they can think for themselves in spite of what may be expected of them...
unfortunately, such folks are few and far between nowadays...
I'd love to see a conservative icon telling another conservative icon to go fuck himself...
which is what Barry Goldwater essentially did when talking about Jerry Falwell...

The thread is about people from the "REALM of POLITICS"
not Middle-Earth
That would have to be President Obama. A man who had a single mom, was on food stamps, raised by his grandparents. Still, he graduated near the top at Harvard and was the editor of the Harvard Law Review.
A man who became president in spite of many branches of the KKK disbanding because they say the Republican Party has co-opted their positions and has adopted their ideals and policies.
A president who dragged the country back from depression in spite of one entire political party fighting him every step of the way. A president who took out Bin Laden even though Republicans let Bin Laden go and, according to their leaders, stopped looking for him.
Obama has slowly been repairing the damage brought on by a loony and radical right wing that hates him more than they love this country.
The damage based in hate coming from the radical right has only make Obama an icon. But it has damaged the Republican Party for years to come. Eventually, even "gerrymandering" won't save them.
Not to forget -- Dwight Eisenhower. For his boundless courage in his farewell speech in January 1961.
OK, that's someone from the past, but still, noteworthy.

lol... well... that was, as they say, a teaching moment...
Jimmy Carter. Who's done more after his presidency than him?
