I'm not an astronomer, so there's no way I'd know if an asteroid is coming without someone else to tell me. Maybe some private organization will notice an incoming asteroid and get that information out, but I don't recall seeing anything about that happening in the case of the asteroid mentioned in the OP. So I'm just curious how relying or not relying on the government would have anything to do with avoiding an asteroid strike in this context.

It's not as though I've decided to ignore any possible warnings from non-government sources.
