All these Muslims must be in big trouble

Thanks bodocea. But I'd still like to know the age of the real brides. Frankly, any arranged marriage disgusts me.

Now, I don't know if it applies in this case, but when I was googling, there was another article about how Hamas sets up mass marriages of people who have been widowed by the fighting...widows and widowers. Don't know if that applies in this case tho.

I have only found blogs on this...all saying the same thing. Are we absolutely sure that this is a marriage photo and not a dad and daughter photo?

Absolutely sure? I am willing to be convinced, but you have to convince me logically with something beyond a repeated blog.

Hamas sponsors mass wedding in Gaza
(AFP) – Jul 30, 2009
SHEIKH ZAYED CITY, Gaza Strip — Nearly a thousand Palestinians celebrated marriage on Thursday night in a ceremony organised by Hamas in the north of the Gaza Strip.
Hamas dignitaries including Mahmud Zahar, one of the militant group's top leaders, were on hand to congratulate 450 grooms who took part in the carefully stage-managed event.
"We are saying to the world and to America that you cannot deny us joy and happiness," Zahar told the men, all of whom were dressed in identical black suits and hailed from the nearby Jabalia refugee camp.
Each groom received a present of 500 dollars from Hamas, which said its workers had also contributed five percent of their monthly salaries to add to the wedding gift.
The 450 brides shared none of the glamour, taking seats among the audience of around 1,000 party guests: most couples had already taken part in religious ceremonies elsewhere, with more marriages planned for the next few days.
"We are presenting this wedding as a gift to our people who stood firm in the face of the siege and the war," local Hamas strongman Ibrahim Salaf said in a speech.
The Gaza Strip has been under Israeli blockade since the Islamist Hamas movement seized control there in June 2007. In December and January 1,400 Gazans and 13 Israelis were killed in a 22-day war that left much of the territory in ruins.

Interesting this. Notice in this one there is no comment about the brides being young girls...in fact, it says the brides took seats among the audience. The original picture shows small girls standing with the men...could they be escorts? (I know, but something about this whole thing smells to me.

BTW, the Gaza while held by Hamas is a fairly westernized area of Islam...if I were to see this kind of behavior for real, I would expect it would be in the back mountains of Afghanistan.

If this is true, it is one of the more disgusting things possible to imagine, but my BS detector is twitching.

so your argument is that since the brides took seats they could never have been standing, or walking along side their "husbands"? interesting...

So, you believe those little girls are the brides?

It is not that uncommon for arranged child marriages to occur in the more primitive areas of the muslim world but I've never heard of it occurring in areas considered to be somewhat more civilized (that's very relative). After raising three girls to be women, the thought of this does make me ill, though. I really hope this is someones bad idea of a joke.

I think what we are seeing here is a Prime example of a lie (or at the least a blatant misrepresentation) intentionally spread by someone with an axe to grind becoming the viral truth to many who want to believe it. Then, that misrepresentation taking over the internet....

Thank goodness not everyone is falling for this.

I don't think the person who did this was joking. It was in ernest.

Now...watch this story come back again and again until many accept it to be the truth, no matter how much it is proven false.

I don't have a problem with arranged marriages if that is their custom. I do know a number of Muslims. In fact, my sister dated one for many years. When he finally asked her to marry him, she decided against it. Shortly after that, he went to Jordan to marry a woman his parents had chosen for him.

My sister and he remained in contact over the years. As he explained it, his parents chose his wife for him, but they had one month to get to know each other to decide if they thought they could be compatible. Had either decided they did not want to marry, the wedding would have been called off. So many pre-arranged marriages are not exactly as we think of them.

And finding out that this was a hoax is pretty disgusting. Many of us have enough issues with Muslims; we don't need false accusations to further our cause. Things like this just shade the real issues that are ligitimate.

Even the usually anti-Islamic WND quotes Hamas leaders denying any kiddie-marriage, supposedly the youngest bride was 16 and most of them were above 18. Here: Hamas denies holding mass kiddie marriage

Ahmed Jarbour, the Hamas official in Gaza responsible for social activity, told WND the youngest girl to marry at the ceremony was 16 years old. He said most brides were above the age of 18.

Jarbour, like two other top officials contacted by WND, was offended by the suggestion Hamas would marry off little girls.

He explained the minors seen in the video were family of the bride or groom. He said it was tradition for little girls to dress in gowns similar to the bride. He said the little girls walking down the aisle with the grooms are family members of either the bride or groom.

A WND review of the video found some of the little girls, speaking in Arabic, state they are at the wedding of a family member. The girls interviewed do not say anything about themselves getting married.

Multiple calls to Palestinians who participated in the wedding affirmed the little girls are not themselves the brides.

The OP is a lie.

I'm sure she'll do the right thing and edit her OP.

Very nice post.

It amazes me the amount of hate by those on here, hunting down anything they can to dehumanize those who think different than them. The word "fanatic" comes to mind.

Of course if this would have been true it would have spread like wildfire. Since it's a hoax, the hate filled Fred Phelps types of the world use their propaganda to promote more fear and hate against those who aren't like them.

Shame on you jent, and your fanatic followers, for posting/believing these lies.

Emma, why are you showing a wedding of a different date?

All this is fascinating to me and I think it's awesome that people are investigating it so much.

But there is some twisting going on at USMessageboard.

WND did not report that they were not child brides, they quoted someone denying it. Farah is playing it safe because 1. He's a professional 2. He's not about to jump on to anything without knowing the facts.

I agree. I said real early on I don't know. But I think the video LK offered up as the real wedding is completely bogis, you can tell by the lighting, it was overcast at the real one and LKs show direct sunlight and a whole different background.

The first two links that Emma posted aren't working for me, I don't know if the site is down or it's because I'm at my office which filters a lot.

Her third one is interesting, did you see the one from Al-Jazeera??? It spotlights a man that lost his leg and doesn't show him with any "bride" except a very young girl about the age of those in the picture in the OP. And at the end, it zooms in on her face pretty much giving the impression that she is the bride. See for yourself.

The only "adult brides" I've seen were in LK's video, and that's not the same event. That one was in "shambles" this one has the limo.

And I agree with Chanel, they really sexualized those little girls.

But bottom line, I don't know. I got the email from a friend that seems to think the PhD is legitimate.

I was leaning toward it NOT being real until I saw the end of the al-Jazeera video.
